Kodas, in car

Well, today at work a pretty little package arived touting "KODA6". You can just imagine the anticipation I felt for the 30 minutes between their arrival and my lunch hour. The units weigh a total of 15 pounds, bringing my total Adire weight to 65 pounds, or almost twice my amplifier weight...

The huge midbass drivers were the first things I wanted to look at, but I forced myself through the small stuff first. I opened the box with the crossovers and tweeters and was just blown away by the beauty of the crossovers. I pulled the tweets out and was stunned by their weight. Big, solid, deep tweeters. Really well put together. I was immediately shocked and disapointed at the location of the terminals, pointing straight to the rear of the unit and ending flush with the rear of the magnet, making surface mounting difficult. I removed them from the trim ring with ease, in fact almost dropping them on the floor. A solid snap told me the unit locked firmly into place.

The mids are HUGE. I would guess almost 5.25 inches all the way to the base of the magnet, with a 5.625 cutout. I did have to do some trimming of the door panel for them to fit :( . I quickly and temporarily installed them and the tweets at roughly 45 degrees off axis.

The Mids are not as efficient as the Cadence that I had in the doors. With that being said, the Cadence were rated at 60WRMS and the 100 watt Q3000 was set quite conservatively. I know when I get the gains dialed in I will be feeling much better about the output. Deep driving midbass sounding almost subwoofer like filled the car and a crisp, accurate, amazingly smooth tweeter helped round out the chores. With the off axis install I was a bit disapointed in the stage and tweeters, they were almost too smooth. I did do some moving of tweets and noticed they needed to be more on axis to achieve the desired results.

I did let Flawlesskid and BlkX fool around with them while I went back to work. There was a gap in the door behind the mid, so I felt it was lacking due to this, and this evening I reinstalled them better and I was right. Even with the cancellation this set seemed to impress Cort and Chris. Chris runs Rainbow Pro and Cort is a die hard MBQ fan (he likes a bright tweet) who is currently running Crystals, so we have a broad range of tastes between the 3 of us. While I got less than 10 minutes listening time in before the end of work, C & C put them through the paces, playing with them with various tunes. I guess they got about 1/2 hour or 45 minutes in. Both really seemed impressed. Chris likes a laid back tweet and was hesitant to alter the line of the tweets, where Cort feels he would like an A pillar mount. I am hoping they add their reviews here.

Now that they are better sealed off they are quite the real deal. I pulled the axis of the tweet up some and leveled my satge a bit. I now have it close to where I want it and the tweeters quality is way better that I first felt. Really accurate and smooth with amazing transition. I used some DMB where he runs the harmonica way low to piercingly high to get a feel for the transition. Smooth as a babies ass. Midbass is on par with a nice 8" dedicated, really full and tight.

When I get some more time in and reset the amp, I will post some more info. I know that Geo needs to hear these things. The way we both feel about XR tweets... well, these are all you buddy.

Actually I have the tweets angled pretty heaftily upward. I say about a 30 degree angle, with a slight tilt to the drivers side. I wanted to keep pathlengths of the highs as close to each other as possible, yet still maintain a single pointsource. The stage is right at the top of the dash, I am having problems bringing it higher, but right now it is acceptable. I would like for an adjustable crossover as I have them attenuated +2 by EQ, but otherwise, I am quite impressed. Very realistic.

Well after a couple days of playing I managed to get the tweeters where i wanted. I got my stage at almost eye level, slightly to the right of the drivers right ear. The tweets shine. Beautiful accuracy, smooth, realistic tweets with a pure realistic decay. The tweets are so accurate yet display NO siblance, even with exxagerated multiple "S"s they flawlessly reproduce. Cort (flawlesskid) and I sat in the car today and put some live Dave Matthews Band "#36" in, a sweet drum track, and listened amazed at the accuracy of the tweet and the depth of the midbass that moved our pantlegs. The track was reproduced perfectly. It made me feel like the drummer was sitting right in front of me in the car. As a former singer and having stood in front of several drum stages, I assure you I know what it is like. Pink Floyd "Bricks From the Wall" (my personal compilation) just showed the front stage off and allowed for a sweet front/sub display that made me proud of Adire, Dan, and myself. I have never been surrounded by such musical beauty as this. I am amazed. I am simply stunned... I only wish Dan would come out with a nice high current amp (1500-1700 watts sounds right to me), and it must be AB. A nice matching 100-125 watt front stage amp to go with the Kodas, and maybe a nice HU... All I want at this point is to be all Adire. It is just a beautiful thing to be surrounded by Adire.

My gripes about the set are really things that can be overcome quite easily, but I will list them as every reviewer should. I was dissapointed in the off axis responce of the tweeters. I was expecting a greater off axis responce than I recieved. The site touts the set as great at 50 degrees, designed for 30-40 degrees off axis. I truely felt the tweets were far to laid back and less detailed at the roughly 45 degree, 40 degree, and 35 degree axis I attempted. Now that they are at about 30 degrees off they are simply striking. This could be overcome by another gripe i have with the set. Through attenuating the tweet I was able to build my off axis responce some. I really think the set should have adjustable crossover (the thought of ruining the appearance of these crossovers with more terminals makes me cringe, but it is something I felt the set needed). The sheer size of the components, tweet and mid, are a drawback as well for many users, I am sure. After having heard the set, in a good install though, I think I wouldn't dare risk changing anything about the sound charachteristics simply to accomidate a smaller set. Terminal location on the tweet as notated above should be reconsidered as well. I suggest 1 other minor thing to Adire about this set... Offer a grill. All I am doing right now is giving Cadence 1 hell of a great reputation by covering the set with my Cadence grills... I want a green and yellow diamond on the set :p :p :p .

Well, if you aren't happy about giving Cadence credit for your sound...
I have a set of Aura grilles here...
a set of Alpine grilles here...
And a set of JL grilles here...
    :p
I don't use grilles, since they hide nicely behind my stock grilles, the way I am set up currently! B)

JK Geo... I actually loved the US55s and the grilles are from some ZX6s. The grilles are quite simple, and I like that. I would just like to show where my sound comes from... But, those XR grilles... Hmmm...
