Well, I finally got a sub in my girl's car. Everything is working fine finally. We ended up getting a new Pyle sub in a bandpass box off ebay for like 40 bucks shipped. It is an 8" driver. Hooked up to a an old Boss 200x2 amp I am bridging to it. That amp is from the first audio system I did like 6 years ago. After tuning it for a while I have the bass boost at 0 and the low pass filter at about 100. Anything above 100 and the sub starts to sound like crap because its not very accurate... all the bass just starts to jumble together. It seems to play well with songs that have short bass hits like Sean Paul - Temperature. It does not do so well on long bass notes like in Nickleback's - Photograph. The output is actually louder than I thought it was going to be though. I have it set just enough so it doesnt drown out the hi's. it also goes pretty low.. lower than I expected. Overall its a fair sub. I wouldn't have spent any more than what I did on it though. She really likes it so thats all that matters. She isnt what I call very audio sensitive because every setting I would try on the amp and ask her about how it sounds.. the responce was always yeah it sounds good.. . no matter what I did. I was able to pad anything loose down in the trunk and there is no rattle at all. I really like that you can't really hear the sub outside of the car much. Only slightly. So thats about it for now. Her system is done. I think .. with everything.. all the speakers.. install supplies.. we spent.. maybe 150 bucks. Not too shabby. I will post pics soon as I can. I need to hide some of the wires .. prolly in the spare tire well. That PAC OEM-2 module sure does have a ton of wires. Took me a little bit to figure it out but it sure worked like a charm. I will try to get some pics like I said soon as I clean up the install a bit so you can see the equipment.
Hey Dave....I have a question... Does that amp have a LPF on it? if so what is it set on?....Does the HU have LPF on the preout to the sub? The reason I am asking is this.....A guy who works at my #1 towing vendor just brought me a couple amps (I am thinking about adding a little sub bass to my kid's car).....They get repo cars or wrecks and sometimes things get left behind and never claimed.......The one amp is a "rockwood" amp....It has LPF and HPF (you can choose one or the other).....For grins I hooked it up to my truck...I pulled my Kenwood out and slid this baby in and hooked her up...This amp actually does not sound too bad on the sub...I can definitely hear a difference between it and my Kenwood, but it has good output....I was messing around with the LPF and my HU also has it.....if you use both, I will get a cascading effect (not good) and the midbass or low bass will sound mushy and cloudy....If I set my HU for a "through" signal and low pass the amp at the lowest (50 hz) it sounds the best....I also think the slope of the crossover must be fairly shallow, because I am still getting quite a bit of 100-200 hz in the sub...... So I was just wondering if you had LPF and what you were setting it at... hey for free, this Rockwood sounds good....Plenty of output even with the gain all the way down and my sub out and 0 or -1..... Willy
Rockwood is in the Pyle, Legacy, and Lanzar category lol but hell for a free amp you can't really complain....unless you crank the gain and clip the amp and blow your sub from dirty power.
Willy, the amp has a LPF on it. You can select full range or low pass on the amp. I have it set to 100 htz if I let anything higher than that pass through the sub gets really muddy because its trying to play too many things. So I personally like anywhere between 90-100 for the best sound without sacrificing too much range. That is with this particular sub. My Infinity 12 I am able to set at about 150 and it plays just great but its a much more accurate sub. The headunit in her car is just factory so there is no preouts or filters on it. I am using a PAC OEM-2 module to splice into the rear speakers to get my signal to the amp. It converts it into an RCA signal and also features a remote turn on from the module. Made things really easy for hooking up the amp to a factory radio.
ok Dave.....sounds like you got it figured out..... as far as this amp...... You know what is surprising as hell????? I pulled the Kenwood out and slid this in.....I set the bass boost to "on" set LPF to it's lowest point (50 hz) and turned the gain all the way down....On my HU I have the sub out at -3 to -9 depending on the song.....This thing puts out some good bass level......My Kenwood, I connected the bass boost knob, set 75% boost with freq set at 40 and the gain just under half way.. Now I am not sure what freq. the Rockwood bass boost is (my guess is 80-100hz range), but it seems stronger and definitely higher then my selection of the Kenwood....Don't get me wrong, the Kenwood is 100% better in SQ..The class D design and high damping are evident in the control and tightness of the bass......but for free.....damn...this thing surprises me.. My son is not a bass head and he don't crank his stuff.....Should be able to really round out his sound.....I already have a sub enclosure that I built ( I think it is around .75 cu. ft) all ready to drop a 10" sub into....I will double check the cu. ft. of my box.....I may give you all some specs of a driver and get your recommendations on adding a port to tune it.... Willy
An assassin 10 would be right at home in that enclosure if its sealed. If that amp can put at least 200 watts of clean power on it.. you are ready to go. I think they are about 70 bucks though for that driver.. not sure how much you want to spend.
lol Dave have you received your AAA's yet??? I know we all suggest different subs but damn you've been pushing Assassins a lot lately....not gettin on you or anything but its just funny haha Dave I wanna see some pics when you get em in!!!
Its all part of the steps man.. I got the amps I need for the Ranger. Next is are the coaxials. Then! THENNN!!!! I can work on getting Willy to make me a box for a 12" Assassin!!! muahahahah!!!! Just going to use my Infinty Perfect 12.1 until I get to that part... it's pretty old (5 years), still works but I know it wont last forever, so I am looking for a good replacement for it.
Well tonight I was driving and listening close to this amp I got for my son (the Rockwood).....I had the gain at 0, bass boost switch "on" and LPF set at highest number (250 I think).....I was noticing some of the bass guitar notes were way down in strength versus the kick drum.....I had my HU sub out at -7 (the range is from -15 to +15)......So I pulled over and flipped the bass boost switch off....I left the gain at 0 and LPF on 250.....Got back in and set HU sub out to -1 and drove off.....Man, I gotta tell you, that evened out the bass response....I rocked it pretty hard all the way to where I was going (about 30 minute drive) and it sounded damn good.....On the way home, I was really hittin it pretty good and listening close.....this amp sounds great. I don't know if I set my Kenwood for 0 gain and no bass boost if I would have that good strong bass.....very strange.....I know this Rockwood is supposed to be a cheap ass amp.....I would never have went out searching to buy one, but I am VERY impressed.... Willy
Yeah Willy sometimes we get lucky like that. This little 8" in the bandpass box I installed in her car is now broke in good and I have to turn in all the way down so it doesnt drown out the hi's. I am very impressed with the amount of output it puts out. Once you set it right it actually sounds good.
