Hi all, been gone for a while. Had a few weeks off from work so I spent it doing some temporary upgrades to my sound system. I put an amp to my DLS 5 1/4 component system and I'm not happy with the mid bass that it's producing. It actually kinda sucks so I decided to change them out and move to 5x7's or 6x8's just because that is what my Expy is made for. I would like to put 6 1/2's but i'm told they won't fit, hence the reason why i'm going with the 6x8's. I don't have a lot of choices when it comes to 5x7's and 6x8's so i'm looking at brands like infinity and mb quart. i just want to know it these brands are and good or am i making a bad decision with this. i just not happy with the mid bass that the DLS are putting out, i turn the volume up and i can hear them pushing to hard. Also, when I put the DLS to an amp i now have a engine whining sound. I've rechecked the ground for the amp and it's fine and i also put a noise cancellation thingy but i can still hear it. It's really annoying, any ideas on how to get rid of it?
I have 6x8's but am gonna put in 6.5 inch speakers with some custom baffles...it can be done with some customization
where are your amps mounted?are they/it screwed to metal? i had the same probs with mine and just fiddled with the eq/crossover.
azn, are you sure that 6.5 speakers will fit? are 6x8's a bad idea? Pedro. Actually my amp is VERY temporary so i didn't even bolt it down but i have it in a place that won't move around. They only way i'll stop hearing the whining sound is if a turn the gain down but the gain is less than half right now and if I turn it down any more then it would be useless to use the amp.
my amps gains are set at or below 1/4 and they still put out some nice power.remember the gain is not a volume control. you'll just have to turn the radios vol up higher to compensate.
The larger surface area will typically make more mid bass. I would go with the 6 x 8. Mid Bass is always hard to produce well in a car. It has to do with a very solid mount. Do this, mount the speaker and turn on the radio. Turn it up a little. Put your hand on a surface next to the speaker. Do you feel the vibration? Thats sound that is being absorbed. The more solid the mount the less vibration that you feel. Look at the speaker, touch it, feel it. A good speaker will have a solid cone area. From behind, gently push on the cone near the surround. Does the entire cone move (this is good) or does just the small area around the finger move (this is not good) or does your finger go through the speaker (this is bad). Now a solid mount is the most important by far. Even the most expensive speaker will sound bad attached directly to door sheet metal. AZN's idea with the 6-1/2 might be a good idea if the adapter plate is 3/4-inch MDF. This would make a good solid mount. But personally I would still lean toward a larger surface area.
My DLS are mounted with MDF. I just think the surface area is just too small to produce the right amount of mid bass. Thanks for you input, that was actually what i wanted to hear. Do you think infinity or MB quarts would be good enough?
you think that 7 or 8 inch can be done? I just don't have the time to figure out how i'm going to do that (too busy with work) that's why i was just figuring 6x8's cuz it's made for my truck. What kinda work would that involve?
a 7 isnt that much bigger than the 6.5. ok an 8 my need a little more to make it work. doesnt someone make a 6x8 comp set?
Somehow i knew you were going to say that. i know the highs of infinity are very good (for me at least) but i have no idea on how their mid bass is. I guess i have to listen to them when i go in October.
Hey, one thing i have learned, whenever i start messing with the door speakers, no matter what i put, it was better before with the factory speakers. And i have figured out why!! The factory speakers have a nice hole in the door metal so that the back of the speaker sounds go inside the door and it acts as a huge box therefore creating huge amounts of bass. When you start putting components that do not use that same hole in the door for bass or is not mounted and sealed how the factory speakers were then it's just like holding the component speaker in your hands and playing it. There will be next to nothing for bass. Everyone says to use baffles but i disagree 100%. I think you must use the door cavity to create the bass. This is only my experiences with this, take it as you will!! lol My 6x9's wouldn't fit in my doors because the magnet is way too big and will interfere with the window rolling down, also i had 5x7's originally so the hole is smaller. I wanted to use that hole still and as it works out when i inverted the 6x9's the woofer cone matches perfectly with the 5x7 hole allowing all the bass to go inside the door and create tons of bass. I'll post a pic and i know it looks like **** but it will be fiberglassed nicely and look professional in time! This is only my thoughts, i could be wrong but i doubt it LOL..
That's kinda my thought. I know my expedition is made to have 5 x 7's or 6 x 8's thats the whole reason why i want to put them back in. I remember that my factory speakers put out real nice bass but the highs were terrible. Thats why i went with the DLS but niw i dont have the mid bass but my highs are great. I'm thinking about going with infinity cuz i like the sound of the highs and HOPEFULLY i can get my mid bass back
i would try to use something as a baffle...i know they sell baffles in many different sizes Foam Speaker Baffles at Crutchfield.com i am thinking that you could use just about anything..sound deadener...i know there has to be something....<-------------needing help!!!!!...lol
I've heard of those baffles but they have mixed reviews. Has anyone around here given them a try? do they really make a difference?
i have used them before...and what they say about cutting small hole in them is true...about a 1" hole makes a huge differance.
