Ok....As some of you know, I put a HU and new speakers in the front and rear of my sons car (1994 pon. sunbird).....I am gonna add a sub(s) to the set-up....I recently got that amp (the Rockwood) and it is surprisingly good sounding and good power (the amp was free to me too).....Last night I went to the place where the guy gave me the amp (a local towing vendor of mine....very good friends of mine) because he told me they had several boxes and subs.... Side note... They are a tow vendor, they get repo's, wrecks and also cars towed that were abandoned, or parked illegally....When these cars get junked or go to auction, any thing in the cars they want, they remove (it is now legally their property)..... I found two Kenwood 10's that seemed to be in good shape....They also had a few beat up boxes with and without drivers in them....There were also two 15" Kicker comps.....They told me I could have the Kenwoods free of charge. The Kickers are gonna be used by one of the owners sons..... So here is my problem.....these are the subs I have without this box.. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-NCnUS7IDHe1/cgi-bin/prodview.asp?i=113KSCBP1 I need to know what type of box I should build to put these in to get the best out of them...I am looking for quality #1....not "boom boom".... These are 4 ohm subs, so if I parallel them into a two ohm load, I cannot run them from this amp....I could go with one sub and bridge the amp or two subs and run the amp in stereo mode.... What do you guys recommend??...I don't know where to find any specs on these other than the listed freq response and power ratings.... Any ideas??? Willy
I would not load that amp down too hard, so either use one 10incher in mono, or the two 10 inchers in stereo. as you stated. I might just go with one ten incher and see how you like it. The addition of the other 10 would not be a problem if you decide you want it if you ever get a differnet amp. Either way, a nice vented box would do the trick.
Viking.... Do you have any suggestions as to how to determine the size and tuning the box....I currently have this box I previously built...It is 1 cu. ft. sealed....I could add a port and vent it....Would this be a good size for one of these tens? What size port to tune it?? I can modify this box or build another one..I just am not sure about size and tuning.... Thanks Willy
Not knowing the speakers parameters, i would say that 1 cubic foot would be a good starting point. if you dont want to go to the trouble of venting it, might play around with some dacon in it to change the sound slightly. If ya do wanna vent it, we need to know the speakers TS parameters. Another option, which I just looked for and could not find (not a bad thing really) is a port tuning nomogram, they tune the air in the box to a specific frequency, without taking the woofers parameters into play.
Well...neither one of these subs are any good....I took DVOM and checked ohms across the speaker terminals.....Shows open on each one....I went right to the leads and re-checked....same thing.... Hooked them up to speaker leads on a little stereo here at work...no sound...no movement...no nothing....So it is back to the drawing board... Willy
Best thing to do with speakers like that...... Sacrifice them to the engine noise gods of car audio. Appease them by either setting fire to the cones with a torch and lighter fluid, or run them over repeatadly with a truck till very flat, THEN set fire to them. Either way will allow you to have a clean, engine noise/ground loop free car ausio sytem in your next install, post pics!
those subs suck...me and my friends picked a couple up on heavy trash day lol Plugged it into the wall socket and it died instantly....crappiest kenwood ever made
OK....They told me to come back there and look.....I grabbed this box....The drivers say "the crunch"...They are 12's and the box is bandpass....Figured I could build a box (sealed or ported) and use one or two of them...they are each 4 ohm....... Thoughts on this?? They do supposedly work....I have not hooked them up to anything as of yet.... Willy
good ol crunch!!!!! LOL! we used to sell them, hadd decent luck with them too, the old crunch amps were so dammed protected you could not blow them up!!! well, almost! The speakers were OK. Why not leave them in the single relfex enclosure and try them out?
I will leave them and try them....I know I gotta pull the one driver out...I looked through the port and the wire on the terminal is just twisted and loose..I think all the other ones are on with a terminal spade....I am gonna solder it.....If the box works and sounds decent, it will be easier...I can just set it in....Gotta run wires for RCA and power for the amp.... Will let you know..thx Willy
