Ok, Ive got a 2007 aveo.. Got around to taking door panal part way off, all I could see was a 4" speaker. After taking the panal all the way off I see it is actually some fit kit, that raises the speaker and takes up additional space.

My question(im sure its a stupid one, but everyone aleady tells me 3-4" is all that will fit.).... The actual size of the hole(after the mounting barcket is removed) is 5 1/4 ince. So my stupid questin is shoudnt any 5 1/4" speaker pair fit? Does anyone know if a larger speaker would fit the opening?

One other question.. Why would GM go as far to make a mounting kit that probably costs more than the speaker.. Why not just put in a larger speaker....

Thanks for any help.. Sorry its been many years since Ive replaced factory speakers and want to get it right.

Yes the recommended speaker for your car is a 4-inch speaker. Can you fit a 5-1/4-inch speaker? Not sure. Do you have enough depth clearance. Roll the window all the way down. Will it hit a speaker magnet?

Can you fit a 5-1/4-inch speaker? Maybe, you might need to make your own spacer. But you could make it fit

with the window rolled down, check to see how much depth you have from the opening to the window.

most speakers are a hair less than 3 inches.

Most 5-1/4" speakers are under 2".

To answer the question "Why do the manufacturers do this?"

    • For the same reason GM uses the Class 2 Databus
    • For the same reason the Chevy Citation mounted the radio vertically
    • For the same reason an older Honda built the radio into the steering column
    • For the same reason an older Camaro had the radio on a stalk on the center console
    • For the same reason 95-97 Civics had the keyless entry built into the radio

They do it to make it harder to replace so they can hope to charge you 10 times what it's worth.
