Hi all. I am a novice when it comes to this stuff and I only recently bought a new car. Which had no stereo. I bought a kenwood kdc-mp243 http://ae.kenwood.com/Car_Entertainment/1DIN_Receivers/KDC-MP243 I also bought 2 4 inch jvc speakers, I know they are weak. The head unit is 4 x 50 watts. Which From what i gather means it can power 4 speakers 50 watts each. The jvc speakers I currently have are 120 watts each. When I turn the head unit above 3/4 of max volume, I lose signal and it goes fuzzy and crackly, etc. I belive this is because the head unit cannot power the speakers. I only have 2 speakers so I dont see how it works. Does everyone who buys a head unit and speakers buy an amp aswell? How do you get around it? I've never seen speakers that are 50 watts or less each. so its hard. Any info on what I could do would be greatly appreciated.
You are looking at peak power rating when you need to look at RMS power. Those speakers probably aren't 120 watts RMS and the head unit is around 22 watts RMS. When you turn it up too high you get distortion because the head unit is trying to do more than its capable of. Now do you need an amp? Absolutely not, you aren't going to get too much out of 2 four inch speakers anyway. I say play with the head unit setting until you get what you are looking for.
Hello. Thankyou for your post. By playing with the head unit, do you mean turning bass up or down and changing treble etc? Can you tell me which things to change and to what level to change them to?
yeah, just go through all of the settings with it turned up at a descent volume and adjust them until it sounds good to your ear.
thankyou very much. The way my current set up is, am I doing damage to the speakers or head unit with high volumes? The last thing I want is blown speakers. Here are the specs. Head unit - Kdc-mp243. http://ae.kenwood.com/Car_Entertainm...vers/KDC-MP243 • Maximum Output Power : 50W x 4 • 2.0V 1 Preout 2 Us-audio 4" 2-way 120W max Speakers. Model usa42zx 4 ohm frequency response: 100-20 khz Sensitivity: 88db 1" voice coil 6 0z magnet Basically, with that setup, would the speakers be getting enough power and the sort, to run correctly at moderate volumes. I dont have them up to loud, in fear they will blow, but my car is very loud so I like to have them up fairly high when on the highway. Any advice is appreciated.
No you won't do any damage and likely won't blow the speakers. Just whenever you hear distortion turn the radio down a couple of levels. Once you play with the settings and get them the way you like it should sound fine. What are you looking for out of this setup?
Im just looking to have a radio I can listen to while going too and from work. I dont want it too loud, and I dont want the car shaking with boom boxes etc. I would just like to be able to hear it above all the highway sounds. I put 2 phillips 6 inch speakers in the back, but they are slightly out of sync with the front ones, what causes this?
