Hello everyone. New guy here. I had car stereo systems in my cars in the past, but that was many years ago. Its like I'm starting over. Some of the brands that I'm familiar with are still here some not. Anyway I wasn't planning on getting a system for my car untill the factory unit crapped out so I went looking for a replacement. At first all I wanted was a basic setup, but the bug got me. After hours of listening and A&B compairisons. I ended up wth a system that has great SQ and not so much SPL, (I'm too old for that haha). My HU is a Pioneer Premier DEH-P710BT. I had Pioneers in the past and I like th SQ of this deck. Also features are great and it's not a difficult deck to learn for an old guy like me. Amplifiers are Tru Technology Billet B475 powering DLS Iridium 6.2 comps in the front and Ultimate 6.5 coax in the rear. Sub is a JL 10w3 in a Steath Box because I don't want it in plain sight, also I still need the back seat. Powering the sub is a DLS Reference RA20 amp bridged,440w @4 ohms. Cables that I'm using are Kimber PBJ's that I had laying around the house thats used for home audio, and it works really well. Speaker cables are 12ga. and power and ground cables are 4ga. All door are sound deadened with Dynamat. I really like the way the system sounds. Maybe I can get some expert advice from the gurus in this forum to improve the sound or when the upgrade bug hits again.
WElcome!!! sounds like you have a really nice set up as it lays now... How do you find the iridiums? I was thinking about getting them but i decided to go with Focal K2P's instead. Still waiting for them though. I'm not too much of a JL audio fan but it will get the job done especially in a SQ set up where not a lot of bass is needed anyway. Do you still want to do some upgrading? what did you have in mind?
Thank you for the warm welcome. As for the sound of the Iridiums they really sound sweet and not harsh. The high freqs. sound delicate and the mid bass not heavy. Overall smooth sounding speaker system. I was thinking about installing a line driver (although I didn't know what a line driver did untill I researched it, I'm an old dude. Didn't have line drivers back then, haha). Also I was wondering if I shoud do the big 3 upgrade?
well, with your current system and since it's an SQ system. I don't think you are having any voltage drops so the big 3 wouldn't really matter in your situation... As far as a line driver goes, if you're head unit doesn't have 4V and up preouts then you may want to look into it. What i would suggest if you want to have better crossovers or equalizing you could look in to getting a rockford fosgate 3sixty.2 or an audison bit one processor. later on you may want to even consider going 3-way active. That's where the fun begins in tuning... I'm not yet at that stage, i'm trying to learn a lot more so maybe down the road in a few years i'll make the switch.. If you have any pics of your set up we would all love to see it. How old is old? I'm 36...
Thank you for the great advice. I'm 45 years old and I'm into listening to music. At first I was into home audio and still am, but once the upgrade bug hit me, I went head first into car audio. My home system still sounds alot better than my car system, but I'm quite satisfied with the sound of my car setup. Pics to come
ok that deck has 7 eq bands, maybe an external eq can help the SQ a bit more. what kind of crossovers are being used also. the heads or the amps? or both? do you know the slopes too? a line driver might not do anything for you, it will allow you to turn down your gains to possibly reduce any unwanted noise your amp/s may put out if the gains are set too high. i had an old PG 215ix dual 15 band eq i used for its line driver- 8v out- my amps were rated to take in up to 2v. my gains were on the 2v setting which is all the way down. i had zero noise.
howzit! Its been awhile since I've posted so heres an update. I bought another car a gas saver so my truck is driven less. The upgrade bug hit again. I bought a Tru Technology B2200 which is now powering my sub, and I changed my head unit to a Pioneer Premier DEH-p880prs. I still have the Tru Tech B475 and DLS Iridiums. The sub sounds way better with more control and punch. The 880prs also added to the sq and I'm not even using it to its full potential yet. Have to get to know more about it. As for my daily driver, its nice to save on gas, but couldn't stand the stock sounds. I replaced the factory setup with some of the components from my truck and got some new stuff. First I used my old HU Pioneer Premier DEH-p710bt, and DLS RA20 bridged mono @440w. New stuff includes a JL12w3 on a sealed powered wedge box, (being poweredby the RA20) DLS R6a comps in the doors and Boston Acoustics SC95 6x9's in the rear powered by a DLS RA40 4ch amp. Did the Big Three, All cabling and 4ga power and ground cables are from Knukonceptz. Finished putting the system in my car yesterday, it sounds good but it has to be broken in. It'll sound better as I keep playing it everyday.
I just couldn't leave it well enough alone. The R6A's sounded good but it just wasn't doing it for me. I guess having the Iridiums in my truck I needed to to get better sound so I went to my local audio shop and got a great deal on some DLS Nordica 6.2 and right out of the box they sounded great. Can't wait to hear when they're broken in.
Howzit well the Nordicas sound awsome, I think they are pretty much broken in. The tweeters are really smooth sounding, and they go down deeper than my Iridiums. Got my hands on a Premier DEH-P800PRS headunit BNIB so I'm going to swap out the 880PRS thats in my truck (Tru Technology,DLS Iridiums,JL 10W3 Kimber Kables) with the 800PRS, and install the 880PRS in my daily driver,(DLS Reference amps, DLS Nordicas, JL12W3 Knukonceptz) and out comes the Premier DEH-P710BT. I'm curious to see if the 880PRS will make the Nordicas sing. Thinking about going active but I don't have the knowledge right now so I have to do some research and maybe with the help of the many knowledgable people in this forum, I might be able to try it. I'm in no rush though.
