I just bought a brand new F150 Supercab. Since I will NEVER ever have anybody in the back seats anyway, I had already decided to rip out the back seats.... just for space in general.... but what the hey > a brand new truck, with lots of space..... I think I need a nice system now, huh ? Anyway, I plan to start buying speakers, amps, and the other hardware later this year, and hope to have everything finished by Feb. of next year. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ So here's the whole scoop in a nutshell; Bells and whistles mean absolutely NOTHING to me. I'd rather have an ugly install, in which the hardware was just hidden, than pretty, visible stuff. The brand names of my equpiment means nothing..... except that if it has a "great name" I know I'll be paying for it, and I probably don't want it. The main sound source ? I don't care if its an iPod. What I am saying is, I want it as LOUD and as CLEAN, for as CHEAP, as I can get by with. Nothing else matters. How much sound will $2K buy nowadays ? I know I want at least a 3 way system {mids + highs, mid-bass, and sub-bass} and of course 5 seperate channels of power} Is this too much to ask for $2K ? $3K would be a stretch for me...... but if that's what it would take.... Anyone ? Thanks very much, Fish
Hey BTW..... I saw the one thing where the moderator asked us 'not' to ask stuff like, "what's the best amp" or "whats the best speaker" as obviously, everyone has their own opinions, and we don't need another Internet war here I'm just asking for "your opinions" on the best bang for the buck, especially with amps, and speakers. Again, I don't need a lot of bells and whistles..... just a TON of clean power, and speakers that can handle it, and sound very musical at the same time. Thanks again, in advance, Peace, Fish
what are the speaker sizes for the doors? also do you want rear fill? how much power are you wanting? will you be needing a high output alt when your done,or just enough power for the stock electrical. oh dont forget your big 3 upgrade.that always helps the stock electrical system.
a simple 4ch for mids and highs and a mono sub amp can be had for less than 500 or so. do you prefer matching brands for the amps?
Hello Pedro... I'm not even sure yet on the stock door speaker sizes, but I'd have to guess 5" ? I absolutely will not need rear fill. How much power ? Hmmm. That's so tough to say, when one amp company claims like 2000wt, then you find a 500wt Rockford Fosgate, that needs more juice, and puts out more actual measurable watts. I'd like to drive a couple of nice, mid-level 12" subs, pretty much to their full potential, so maybe you can tell me. An aftermarket alternator.... not somthing I had figured for, but maybe sometime shortly down the road, from the intial stereo install. About how much do those run ? I do like (and did have once) an extra battery, wired with a battery isolater, and I know that's only about $125 total, and very cool to have. I kinda' sorta' like the idea of matching amps..... but then if one brand of mono subwoofer amp was the winner by a landslide, and another was a better value for a 4 channel, I guess I might go that way. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Pedro (and anyone reading this) what do you think about this amp ? http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_9798_Rockford+Fosgate+POWER-1000.html ....and these subs; (not sure if I'd need the 4ohm or 2ohm version, with the dual voice coils and all.... but I think I'd want to provide a 2ohm load for the amp right ?) http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_3407_Kicker+05CVR124.html I'll be glad to answer any more questions about what I'm wanting from my new system.... Thank you, Fish
if its ford its always 5 x 7s in the doors unless you have the nav system but at the same time 6.5 components will fit perfect in those same holes
good choices for both amp and subs. (i like kicker). that amp seems very flexible. 1 ohm stable on all channels, sweet. you could do multiple midbass on one channel and have mids and highs on the other 2. 2 or 1 ohm on your sub stage is ample power. either 600 watts @2 ohms or 800 @ 1ohm. its up to you. your stock alt might be able to handle it. mine(stock 105 amp alt) is handleing my 5ch and a small 2ch(rear fill). with a total of 1000(5 ch) and 100 (2ch) @12.5v. more with the engine on.
oh and we all know rockford is very under rated so it will maybe need an extra batt for good measure, and the thickest gauge wire you can get. 1-0 gauge to on the safe side. high out put alts vary in price depending on the out put. what is your truck's alt rated at? the average price is around 300-450 or so. a 150-200 amp should do.
Right on guys.... My truck does have the 5.4L, but I'm still not sure what the alt puts out. Hey I used to know a guy who's specialty was alternators. He took the alternator from my old Chevy S-10 (I think it put out like 80 amps, stock) and re-wrapped it to put out like 150 ! Before that, I must have went through like 5 alternators ! After that, never another 1 That was a long time ago. Don't know if he's still doing them.... but I still see him driving by his house. Might swing by there sometime soon. Hey BTW, I was originally saying I wasn't too worried about the "source" as long as it was digital, I knew it would sound good. Plus, I went into this thinking that a "really nice" deck, would cost a TON ! But after doing a little research here and there, I've found that a lot of guys really love the Alpine CDA-9887.... and I can get one for only $319 from Amazon. Hmmm. Okay. So twist my arm Peace, Fish
Excellent post ! Thank you for the link johnnyv. I've saved that for reference, and will get this stuff done ASAP. The one "extra" thing I believe I'm going to do (as I liked ikt so much with my one super system from way back in the day) is the extra, big booming deep cycle, group 31, mounted in the bed of my truck, and connected to the alternator with a battery isolater. The way I feel about the existing alternator is, I'll just beat the crap out of it, and if can take it, great. If not, I'll either get an aftermarket, super-duper model to replace it, or maybe have it rebuilt by an alternator pro, who knows how to squeeze a bunch more juice out of them. Thanks again guys, Hope I don't drive you guys crazy with a million and one questions, here shortly Peace, Fish
that big 3 upgrade will deff help with letting the alt put out its power more easily without the restrictiveness of the stock spaghetti thin cable. even with my a/c and wipers on in the rain with the radio playing at a decent vol mine can manage a consistent mid 13v output. so if your alt is biggger than my 105 amp then you should be just fine.
