At school today i was talking to some buddies of mine about how my motor is coming along. Some cocky little punk says "what ya got in that El Camino" So i said...its just a 305. He says..."thats an 8 right" so i agreed. He made a bunch of funny faces and says. I'll out run you and all i have is a 4. First thing that pops into my ming is "A CIVIC OWNER" I was right....CIVIC. Not really rice...no stickers but still. I told him no that i dont want to race but he kept on bugging everyone. So ok......we got on an old backroad. From a dead stop we both floor it. He gets a car length jump on me. A few seconds I catch up to him. About 1/8 road. I beat him by two car lengths. So we both pull into the gas station. And get this...no really...get this. He says "Dude...I almost had you" I thought i was going to bust a kidney. Last edited by beaux at Nov 7 2002, 03:56 AM
civics and most imports are geared higher, and have a Higher Redline... American Cars are Geared lower, and have a lower Redline Therefore Imports will accelerate faster than a early 80's v8 because EPA crap was just getting started and Horse power REALLY dropped off in the mid 70's or so...... and with the lower gearing they dont have that great of acceration, but to do the Civic lack of HP, they lose there advantage once you get the beast going....
Thats why Civics have NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ! Damn Mike dont you know anything? Slap on a turbo and problem solved
well my main point is you can not take a 80's stock V8 and Put up against any late model... the power the Motors have today and what they had them are drasically differant. Take a look at some stock Production specs in those years, most 4,s and V6's stock from any manufacture are getting higher HP rating now then the V8's back then this is all written history, take a time line of car They started out low HP, then the Gain and Gained to a Peak in the 60's or 70's.. then the Gas Crisis Hit and people wnating more Milage per Gallon and the EPA started with all the Regulations, so HP and Speed took a Back seat, Now the Manufacturer are learning to make Both HIGH HP and Good Milage, Take the new Corvette Z06, one of the most powerful, if not ht most powerful vette ever, and gets like 30MPG highway
Man oh man do Corvettes make me drool but for the money I would take the 350Z any day and have the cash left over do to whatever my little heart desires
Guy came up to me today at school like we'd been friends for years. Came up "so whats happenin buddy" I dont even know this guys name. Hope he's not one of those guys like Jim Carrey on "The Cable Guy" Come knocking on my door..."Racer Guy".....knock knock knock...."RACER GUY!!!" LOL. I thought i was going to get stomped when he got that car length jump on me. His car even chirped the tires. And my Ol' Elk just kinda lumbered off the line. Once I got moving though...it was all over. Really have to say though.....i was sweating it. My elk really is nothing of a speed demon. BTW Mike...the main problem with early 80's V8's were the pellet style cats they used. DID NOT flow well at all. Old 350's gain as much as 30hp just from a decent exhaust system. My car is....well..probably not legal. I have true duals all the way from the manifolds. No cats running through dual glasspacks (glasspacks are gutted so its basically just an enlarged portion of empty pipe) Almost Zero restriction. My engine is rated 140hp stock. HP ratings were with all accessories and A/C hooked up. The only accessory on my motor is the alternator and water pump. Electric fan from a ford just made its way in a few weeks ago.
