How can I tell if my amp is dead in my 2002 Yukon XL? My wife said before the radio quit working that there was smoke coming from the glovebox area. I visibly checked every fuse that I could find that was associated with the stereo. The head unit (factory Delco cd player) comes on and appears to be working but I get no sound from any of the speakers??? I think the factory amp is located behind the glove box on the firewall. I thought the fuses would blow before the amp would? I am really not positive that the amp is the problem but it is in the area where the omnious smoke came from. GMC dealership wants 445.00 for a new amp!!!!! Any ideas on what my problem is? Thanks for any help, Bryan
does mamma like to play it loud? - fuses usually do not smoke when they fry, but amps do.. was she cranking out the tunes when things went kabosh, or just chillin with some barry mantilowe? I'd look online at some Gm truck forums and search for amp location.. there should be plenty of information for you to find, so that you can isolate and test the amp. I do know this: that the little gm replacement amp is NOT WORTH that kinda money.. if you have to replace it, you can get a new HU, new amp (if needed for mids), and new door speaks for that kinda money. the stuff won't be top of the line, but it will be much better than the junk that mamma torched..
The Amp (unless its Bose) controls only 2 speakers. So i would guess that atleast one of the speakers controled by the radio is shorted. It takes only one shorted speaker to shut down all audio. Its a protection circuit in the Delco system. Here is what I would do before I would condemn the amp. The rear most speakers are usually the problem. The covers simply pull off. Remove both rear speakers (9/32- inch nut driver) and unplug them. See if the radio comes back on.
Thanks for the info guys...I checked for shorted speakers but to no avail. I am afraid it's the amp... If the amp only controls two speakers then why do I get no sound at all? I removed the amp last night (God I hope it was the amp I removed and now I have no idea how to tell if its fried or not? Any ideas???
If the inputs to the amp are shorted it will cause the radio to go into protect. Did you remove the rear speakers? Or unplug them? The Delco Radio can only control 4 speakers and most Tahoes have 6. The amp is needed to do the other 2. The speakers controlled by the amp are the speakers in the back doors. The front doors and the rear speakers (the 4 x 10's) are powered by the radio. Most shops can bench check the radio for only a few dollars. I am still willing to bet that the radio is OK. I personally have only seen one Declo amp go bad, in every other case it was a bad speaker. Is this radio some GM high end system such as Monsoon or Bose?
I want to add one more thing, you can send both the radio and amp to United Radio in New York, for an estimate. They have fast turn around and very reasonable prices. And a good warrenty. My shop uses them all the time. www.unitedradio.com Check them out online or call them. Personally I would put in an aftermarket radio. (i would still check the speakers)
Well, I noticed the small speaker (tweeter?) in the front passenger side door was hanging loose inside the grill. It seems the plastic lugs that secure it to the door panel had broken. I thought maybe this had shorted out the system. I unplugged and removed the speaker to try and super glue the bracket. The radio still didn't work so I removed the factory amp.....I think Atleast the truck still runs...If I unplugged the rear speakers will the radio work even with the factory amp taken out? It is just the regular Delco CD player with speakers in the front and rear doors and one in the very back I believe. I am not up to speed on these new systems....back when I was younger the head unit powered all the speakers and you added an amp to run a subwoofer. Should I just put in an aftermarket system and will that still require the factory amp which I removed? This is my wifes truck/taxi and she just wants her radio back....I'm just trying to find the most economical fix.
Just one speaker in the rear, that changes everthing. I wish you had said that earlier, yes, the amp on that system powers all of the speakers. You have one of the GM High end systems. The amp need to be repaired. Call United Radio at 1-800-448-0944, tell them the part number of the amp and the can tell you the repair cost. If it is to high your option will be to bypass the amp and replace the radio. Sorry for all the bad info, i wish you had said one speaker in the rear earlier
