I hate to bump an old post like this but I had to tell my story about Progressive. Last year I was really stupid and thought I paid my insurance but turns out my policy was canceled in September. By the time I realized it was canceled it was over 30 days. I procrastinated and lived life on the wild side, driving without insurance. In January I get a letter from the DMV that my registration was suspended because my insurance company informed them (according to state law) I was no longer insured by them, and I didn't send proof of current insurance. I was really living life on the wild side, driving without insurance or registration. In March I read about a federally funded crack down on speeders and figured it was best to get this situation handled. I was fully expecting that I completely screwed myself and would be paying through the nose. I called Progressive and paid the past due balance, and the guy said I would have to reapply for a completely new policy. When he put all the info in my quote for the exact same policy (state minimum) it was almost $200 less every six months then before! So not only did I save $600 by not paying for about 6 months, but in the next 6 months I'm saving $200 because the policy now is only a little over $400. $800 saved in a year all because I was really really stupid.

My point here is normally when someone stops paying for six months their rate goes way higher (the Progressive guy was surprised to say the least). I was really getting screwed by Progressive before. I had no accidents, no tickets on record, and perfect credit, yet I was paying more the I was when I was 22 with a ticket or 2 on record and bad credit (28 now). So definitely shop around for insurance from time to time. To compare apples to apples start with a quote for the state minimum and add to that. I use liability only because my car isn't worth it and I have good health coverage from my job.
