Okay, I have this super wierd problem with my audio setup. I think the problem has to do with my amp but I'm posting it here because my sub is the one making wierd sounds. Setup: Head Unit --> Electronic Crossover --> 1600w Amp --> 1300w Xplod + I have a tiny budget so don't make fun of my stuff + Problem: When I turn my Head Unit on my sub starts going in and out about once every 0.5 seconds which creates a deep sound everytime and is super annoying. Even if I take out the RCA cables it still makes the sound which is why I'm thinking it's the amp. The weird part is that I can stop it with my hand sometimes. If i put my hand over the sub real quick it stops. Then if I tap the sub it starts back up again. This is the weirdest problem I've ever had. The only thing I can think of it being is a capacitor. I don't have a capacitor and I've never used one. If a capacitor is a must have then let me know because nobody has ever told me! Thanks so much for all your help guys!
Welcome !! Sounds like your subwoofer speaker wire is grounding to the metal frame of your car somewhere. Maybe pinched speaker wires.
capacitors are the devil! i've seen an amp do something similar. it pulled the cone in one way and never let go until i shut the amp off. make sure your amp isn't touching any metal of the car. this may also mean a FET has a short in it.
CrAzIeSt problem ever! continued... I messed around a little bit and the amp definately isn't touching any metal of the car... Idk what the FET is (would you mind explaining?) No bare wire is touching any metal. The wire does run under the carpeting on the floor which touches metal but no bare wire. Also, I don't think there are any pinches anywhere but that could still be a possibility. What I noticed when I was messing around with it again was that if I take out the RCA cables it stops the sound. So when the RCA cables are in it makes the thumping sound and when they are out it won't start. Keep in mind I have an electronic crossover between the amp and the head unit. Also, songs still play and the bass is excellent but during the whole time (when there is music or isn't) it is constantly making that thumping sound. Thanks for replying so quickly guys and I can't wait to hear what you come up with.
how is your ground for everyting? and FET's are inside your amp. Groud your Headunit behind the dash at most a foot long. never use your stock ground. Ground your crossover to bare metal with no paint or anything and to the same for the amp.
I'm guessing that was it... Okay, so I went out and fiddled around some more. Since I knew I had a crappy amp that was super old I was twisting and messing with all the jacks and knobs and I figured out that if I turn down the amount of wattage that was being output into my sub It stopped making that sound. Then it started back again so I turned it down a little bit more and it stopped. It seemed to fix the problem for now so I'm guessing that's what did it. Hopefully it stays that way. Btw: my sub is getting plenty of power still. Thanks a lot for all your guys help I really appriciate it. I do have one last question. I have other things wrong with my civic like the horn doesn't work and the power locks only work on one side. Is it okay if I post these questions on here or should I go to a different forum for that? Thanks so much!
http://www.bcae1.com/repairbasicsforbcae1/repairbasics.htm also you may want to try getting rid of the crossover. also as jonny said make sure everything is properly grounded especially your crossover. also make sure your RCAs are out of the way of any interference from the power wires.
Just to answer your question an FET stands for field effect transister, or you might see MOS FET which stands for Metal Oxide Semiconducter Field Effect Transister.
got a question for you. Are you running your power wire on one side of the car and the RCA's on the other side? Do not run your power and RCA's on the same side, this can cause that problem as well. Power and remote wire on one side and your RCA's and speaker wire on the opposite side of the car.
To answer your question no. Here is a picture of my settup (hopefully you can see it good) I have my amp under my seat because I don't have any RCA cables that could run all the way back to my trunk. But yes, the wires are running all together for maybe 5ft. I don't really know how else to set it up to where they aren't running together. Thanks for you help
it should be run on opposite sides of the car. it can cause problems that way and ultimately cause damage to your amp or even your deck. That was my first mistake in car audio and I screwed up my amp and deck. Keep the power and RCA's as far away from eachother as possible.
I don't know how to run wires through the middle of the car though. Like it goes from the HU to under the seat. There aren't many options here. Any ideas?
since you have your amp under the seat, in wiring it correctly you may have to pull out the front seats. will you have any problems with that? Next, your power wire from the battery should go along the side of the carpet (your going to have to pull up the carpet a bit as well). It doesn't matter what side you put the power wire on, that's totally up to you. Next for the RCA's and speaker wires you just run it from the stereo on the opposite side from you power (run it under the dash to the opposite side of the car, then run it along the side of the car under the carpet), then run it across the floor under the carpet to the amp. hope that helps. i'm kinda tired, i hope i explained it well.
Lol thanks for the help. I don't know if I'd have any trouble removing the seat but I'm guessing I will. I know what I have to do now. Thanks a lot. Don't forget to post your opinions in my new post on wires. Thanks!
Since I had this problem in my engine I'm not worried about that right now.. at least not untill I get this problem fixed.. thanks for asking tho
