hello, so i need to buy an amp and a sub and i am totally confused by the choices. Basically: I have 2x4" in the front (i will keep these running off the headunit as i cant fit anything larger in the front). I have 2- Focal 6x9 in the back, 75RMS each 4ohms. I realise its not ideal but i am going to use the focals for the mid-highs and then obviously a sub for the Boom...... What do i need? I want to power the 6x9 and sub off 1 amp, it needs to have high pass/crossover etc do i need 2channel amp or 4channel amp? am i right in thinking i have to add up the RMS of all speakers to be amped and then my amp has to have the same RMS output? any recomendations would be appreciated..... thanks
well, if you want to run one amp for the focals and a sub then you should be looking for a 4 channel amp. 2 channels for the focals and the other two you can bridge for a sub. Are you planning to get only one sub? If you plan to run a sub and keep the 6x9's then you'll have to close up the 6x9's so they don't blow once you have a sub in the trunk... You can make enclosures for the 6x9's... What kind of sub are you looking to put in your car? 10', 12', 15'???? if you'll be running a sub off two of the channels of your 4 channel amp then you'll want to find either a single voice coil 4ohm sub or a dual voice coil 2ohm sub so you can wire them at 4ohm which is what most amps can handle if they are bridged... Before we can recommend anything, we need to know how much you are willing to spend for a sub/s and amp...
well the 6x9 are allready in boxes, i have a van so they are fixed to the sides of the roof, i was just going to get 1 sub, 10'' or 12'', im not after a bone shaking sound here, just to be able to go a lot louder and actually feel the base, the van is rather noisy travelling along, when i am stopped the set up sounds good, and im really pleased with the Focals as they are a new buy. i heard sometimes the 10'' can be better as in they have a more defined bottom end, as opposed to a 12'' being a bit more boomy, i listen to dance music. my budget would be $500
not true about the 10 compared to the 12". It all depends on the enclosure it's in. a 12" has more potential than a 10" because it has more cone area so that would equal more bass. $500 would give a lot of options...are you totally against doing a 2 amplifier set up? for $500 i'm sure you could do 2 amps and a sub...
well im not against the idea, i dont want to spend too much if i dont have too, $500 is my max, if i can do a good setup for half that then im happy and i can spend the rest on some decent 4'' for the front
What kind of head unit do you currently have? how many pre outs does it have? I found something that will give you pretty good bass. a two amp set up and 1 12" sub all for less than 400. amp for the 2 focals and 2 4" speakers if you get them: http://www.woofersetc.com/p8083/ASA6004x--PowerBass-4-Ch-600-Watt-Auto-sound-Series-Amplifier.htm sub amp: http://www.woofersetc.com/p8087/ASA4001x--PowerBass-1-Ch-400-Watt-Auto-Sound-Series-Amplifier.htm sub: http://cgi.ebay.com/KICKER-CVR12-CAR-AUDIO-STEREO-SUB-WOOFER-CVR-12-COMP-VR_W0QQitemZ360181328692QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCar_Subwoofers_Enclosures?hash=item53dc7aeb34&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 powerbass is a good budget brand...
Or if you just want 1 4 channel amp and a sub.. here's a an amp and sub for that. Note: the sub is the same make but it's a dual 2ohm sub rather than a dual 4ohm.. sub: http://cgi.ebay.com/KICKER-CVR12-CAR-AUDIO-STEREO-12-INCH-SUBWOOFER-SUB-CVR_W0QQitemZ360178545704QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCar_Subwoofers_Enclosures?hash=item53dc507428&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14 amp: http://www.woofersetc.com/p8062/P18004--Crunch-4-Ch-1800-Watt-PowerZone-Amplifier.htm
thanks for the advice.... im not sure why you said this though in the second post: ''Note: the sub is the same make but it's a dual 2ohm sub rather than a dual 4ohm..'' does that make a difference to my setup?
the difference is on a four channel amp you can bridge 2 channels but at only 4ohms.. that's why you need a 2ohm dual voice coil sub so it can be wired at 4ohms... Hope that made some kind of sense to you.. the first set up i had it so you can wire the sub at a 2 ohm impedance while the 2nd choice would have to be wired at a 4ohm impedance.
have you considered maybe a 5 ch amp. so you can amp the 4's and cross them over hi so they can keep up with the other speakers
