Ok so I just bought this car and it came with a stereo system that was high quality a few years ago and I want to enter it into a competition this weekend but I need to make sure everything is set to what it should be. If someone could read my specs and tell me what I should do to "setup my stereo that would be amazing, this actually was a competition stereo and it has won competitions before but since then all the settings on the deck have been reset an dthe sub frequency control has been changed and I dont know enought to do it myself without some help. SETUP: 2-SPL 15" sealed, 2 Pioneer 6x9's, Coustic 800watt class D amp, Clarion DXZ525 Deck, 2 Nakamitchi 6'' with crossover & tweaters(all Nakamitchi) MTX Thunder 275 Amp, Lightning Battery Ca, Coustic 7-Band Equalizer, whole car (not kidding , roof, door, trunk everything...)insolated with Dinomat, Monster Cables The MTX amp is running all 4 speakers, the Nakamitchi speakers have seperat matching tweaters and the pioneer 6x9's have built-in tweaters, the 800watt amp only runs the two 15's in the trunk. So basically what I did was take it to my local car audio place and the installer took a look at it threw in a cd with a wide range and I got the system "tuned" and I paid 50$. Thing is I want to enter this competition coming up this weekend. I have done some reading on setups and stuff but Im just getting started so I dont really know what to do. Oh yeah assuming the installer had a good ear and dialed in my ranges correctly. So what do I do? to do it myself, what do I need (good test cd's ect....) How do i setup my speakers bass to cutout and let the subs takeover? How do I setup my speakers? What are the general rules to stereos? Just basicall tell me how to like set it up and what to do. Any help good tut. on tuning or anyhelp would be amazing because I really wanna get started in car audio. Thankyou, Tony
1st ditch the pioneer they suck completely SUCK also your system is 2 years old quite outta date, dont get me wrong some of the best audio is the old skool stuff but when your talkin about mtx eclipse and especially pioneer... no not to be offensive but what is this all in, this isnt exactly the best system in the world hell mine would blow it away and ive never entered in a stereo comp? juz interested in going in for fun?
i happen to think pioneer decks are pretty good, they have awsome lasers i dont take verry good care of my cds but theyll only play in my car with the pioneer deck. (he didnt say it was the best system in the world) besides isnt there diffrent levels of competition? maybe u 2 wouldnt be in the same level. for instints if you had another source of power other than the battery under the hood. wich i think you allready know.
i was refering to pioneer speaks... he stated he had pioneer 6x9s and i told him to ditch them they really suck... i like pioneer hus
I am going to assume that you have never competed in SQ. My first 3 years competing was with Pioneer 6 x 8 in the doors and a JBL sub. My truck did not change to Polk Audio till around 2000. About half my trophies (all first and second place) were with the Pioneer and JBLs.
ranger pioneer when comapaired to other speaks suck ass alot of people agree i installed a set of pioneers on my moms factory system and with the bass up they would pop, replaced them with a set of infinity refs no more poping. on my 83 trans am with FACTORY old school pos deck i put in some pioneer 4x6s again sounded like shyt at high volumes nothing but distortion and poping. i replaced them at the time with sonys YES SONYS and they blew the pioneers away...
Again, its all a matter of personal taste. I have to agree with ranger, some very nice car audio sytems i have judged in the past have used pioneer speakers. Are they the best quality, it depends on your purpose, so i say yes, they are of very good quality for what they are. They have been ito car audio for longer than most, so they must be doing something right! Would i use them in a SQ system, no. I personally do not like them compared to other drivers. But for a simple system on a budget, they are very good at what they do.
Hey tonester, did they use an RTA? Thats alot of questions which will take some time to answer! I can personally dial in a mobile audio sound system pretty damned close by ear. To describe and convey what needs to be done is almost impossible. It takes literally years of critical listening to a variety of audio systems to know what to listen for. For the untrained ear, it will be difficult to explain what to do. My suggestion to you is to go to a HIGH END home audio shop and listen to some accurate music they provide. Sit in the listening room in a chair and close your eyes and LISTEN to the music, where each individual instrument emmanates from, how the sereo effest/imaging plays in your mind. You may not like the music, but that does not matter, you are listening to it for a learning experiece, not to bang your head and smoke weed! LOL! That would be your FIRST step in learning what to listen for. There are ALOT of nice car audio systems outthere, but NONE, and i mean NONE, approach the level of a the finest home audio sytems. So start there!
And in SQ, I found that simple works best. For example my center added a whole new set of problems. Great advice from The Viking. I would recommend one other thing. If you have a local Fair or event that has music outdoors. Go and listen. While not the best place to listen to music it will give you a good idea of what music performance should sound like. Compete and listen to the judge, he WILL critique your system. Biggest mistakes people make, way too much bass (I always turned my sub off for SQ), speakers behind you (took away from the sound stage in front of you) and not enough mid bass (usually bad speaker mounting techniques) Compete and have fun thats what its all about.
i have to agree about that when listening to your speaks cut your subs off. when you add the subs it will sound 10Xs better but with it on it will mask alot of the problems with your system...
oh yeah man i know about the home stereos my dad used to be an audiofie and he had an amazing system with 4 electrostats speakers and it was amazing , felt like i was there front row. anyways i just know this stereo did win comps, because i saw the trophies of the owner adn the car but know i might not win and im not really planning on it just i want to know how to set it up, but i'll just go by what the installed tweaked my stysem to and hopefully i have fun, ps, keyboards fukd
While quality of the product is important, in SQ knowing what your doing is even more important. In the summer of 2000, at the Louisiana Bayou Bash, the lady that took second place did it with a pair of Sony Explode 6-1/2 speakers and two Sony Explode 10-inch woofers. Two Sony Explode amps and Sony HU. She knew what she was doing. The install was flawless. Her total system cost was listed as $1500. She beat out systems costing 10 times more. She beat Focals and Infinities and Kove (the list goes on), she beat a lot of competitors. In fact she walked away with 1500 dollars in prize money(the cost of her system) You can find a complete write up on her and her car in Car Audio and Electronics December 2000 issue. The point I'm tring to make is that you can have the best equipment in the world, if you don't know how to install that equipment properly, the Sound Quality is going to suck.
"The point I'm tring to make is that you can have the best equipment in the world, if you don't know how to install that equipment properly, the Sound Quality is going to suck.[/quote] I agree yet disagree...yes the installation plays a SIGNIFICANT role in depicting how your system will perform. However I would like to state that even in my learning stages (and im still far from great) when I installed a low end speaker and installed midrange speakers, better amps etc I noticed they would compliment my shoddy installation a bit better each time. Buddy your gear definitely needs some updating. I'd read around the forums and familiarize yourself with some of the common websites we all use to pick up newer gear etc. For some short money you could turn your vehicle into what I'd say would be a much cleaner sounding, harder hitting system. At this moment I am currently in the process of "reinstalling" my high end speakers the way they should have been installed in the first place. Without the car running, low battery power, a frozen midbass that imbalances the impedance and makes my amp kick off...I have to say my simple fixes that I am performing now has already made the system sound far better than it did before. But I did learn these tricks from reading posts on this forum and other forums. That and fighting with Seth. -MJE-
