I recently purchased 2 Cerwin Vega HED 12" subs (SVC 8 ohms) and a Cerwin Vega HED 300 watt 2 channel amp. The subs are rated at 150 RMS each and the amp is 150 RMS bridged. Can I blow my subs if I turn up my stereo all the way I have the gain at 3/4? I also have a Sony amp that is rated at 1000 total watts. most likely 400-500 RMS.....would that amp be better for my subs or stick with what I have? Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!
Two 150-watt subs wired in parallel will give you 300-watts RMS combined power handling. But if you need to turn up the HU all the way with the amp set at 3/4 gain, you might have a problem. I'm gonna assume that the loudness on the HU is on, the sub out is turned all the way up and your bass control on you HU is also turned up. If thats the case get a bigger amp, and get (or build) a better box. Your subs are OK, you just need a better amp. The Sony is probably rated at less than 400 watts, but probably a little more than 150-watts RMS, so its gonna be the best choice. But I would recommend a 400-500 watt RMS amp.
Thank you for the reply! The volume goes to 50....I try not to have it past 35...on the HU the bass is set at 0....the bass boost on the amp is all the way up.....I do have the loudness on the HU turned on...the box that came with it(factory), the back and top came apart when I first tested out the subs so I reinforced it, but will end up building a better one soon...my concern is that with some of the bass I play, I wonder if I could cause the sub to bottom out or possibly clip. Should I worry about that with this setup? With the song by Basstronics "Bass I love you"...I turn it up and it vibrates like hell but I'm afraid of turning it up too loud and damaging the subs, frying them! I do turn down the bass with the knob when I turn the volume up. I have an extended cab Ranger, was expecting two 12's to shake the hell outta it but maybe I just need a better box and a higher watt amp like ya said!
