i drive a magnum and im thinking of removing the spare tire and making a costome box there. it wont be seen and i wont use any space, cuz it will all be underneath the back floorboard. all the sub boxes i see in the suv's are ported not any sealed boxes. can a sealed box even work for my dodge magnum? also im thinking sealed becouse the same woofer will need a smaller sealed box than a ported one, im just wondering of the sq of the to boxes.

Personally I don't like the sound of sealed boxes.

But it will work fine...sealed boxes are smaller than ported boxes

You say you don't like the sound of a sealed box, and Ranger says he does. What is the major difference between the two as far as sound goes?

    Sorry for going off topic.

sealed boxes simply have a different sound, some will say they're better than ported but thats only due to a difference in SQ, but ported boxes are typically +3db over sealed boxes and that can be a considerable difference. but yes a sealed box will work just fine. if you can try to compare a sealed setup and a ported setup with similar equipment.

i'm using most of my trunk as a sealed box and it kicks ass, not so much boom boom, more musical. But it does shake the hell out of the car on certain notes lol.

i to had 2 15s in a seald box in a trunk and it pound, the diffrence now is i have a suv type of trunk, all open from the back to the front. also am i the onlyone who notices a flutering sound from a seald box? and not so much a ported box.

that fluttering sound is prolly an air leak...if the box is built correctly there shouldn't be any odd noises...just bass

probobly, it was my first box about 6yrs ago. but if its sealed compleatly there shouldnt be any flutering sounds you say? and should still sound good in a hatchbak?

if that box pounded in a trunk.then it will be louder in the hatch.no rear deck/seat to block its output.lol

3db's is a big diff.an increase of 3db's= twice as loud.

i used to have a small box for my kicker 10 and it did a great job,but then i got a ported box for it,and it got louder with the same power.the box did also get bigger.

3 times bigger to be exact.it's up to you whether you want it sealed or ported.

my box had air leaks that i never heard becuase it was way in the back.i just sealed then tiny hole's with black silicone.(black carpet=blk silicone).

try it in the hatch;or have you and you didnt like it?

I am probably gonna use the wrong term here and if so The Viking (knows bigger words than me) will correct me:lol:. Sealed boxes tend to have a smoother roll off and tend to blend with the sound from the other speakers better. I believe the correct term is Transient response. Even if we make a size mistake the sealed box is much more forgiving.

Ported boxes are louder and play lower. But even the slightest size or tuning error will make for poor transient response. The ported boxes I have advised on all tend to lean toward what people wanna hear, not toward SQ. People want loud, tight, and low. The bass is a seperate part of the music for these boxes.

Transient response means that it all comes together and blends. Do this, download Space Trucking by Deep Purple. Play it on a GOOD Home stereo. Notice how low the guitar gets and the fact that you feel the guitar. Do you get the same effect in your car, you should. I do.

The sub in my truck adds just that little bit more that my 5 x 7's need to make a really full sound.

Sorry to take up your space Magnum340

well maybe i should just explor and build 2 difrent boxes. it will cost about 20$ more and since i enjoy building boxes, 20$ more to find out exacly what sounds better is not a bad idea

just make sure to seal those seams up so you don't have any more fluttering lol

sealed boxes to me sound a bit "choked" and too tight and fast

I like ported because to me it sounds more "relaxed" and more "natural" and "thicker"...yeah this may make no sense at all haha

When i listen to rock...i like to sound of the kick drum and bass guitar from a ported box rather than a sealed

one more thing if i was to build a ported box, dose any shape matter? as long as its all sealed up with the corect port, and i herd the ported box will not sound good underneath were the spare gose, something about the air flow needs to be in the open? it was just a buddy who mentiond it to me.
