Hi, we just bought a 1985 Ford PU. It had a Panasonic CD-DFX301U head unit/cd player. There are 2 small Pioneer high range tweeters, 2 Sony Xplod door speakers (guessing 6.5"??), and a Sony Xplod sub. The ACC power wire had to be pushed and wiggled for the system to work. I looked at the wiring harness and figured I must have a cold solder on the deck itself, altho in hindsight, it might have been the red wire on the harness was the problem. Doesn't matter because I removed the HU, took it apart (what a PITA to get to the PC board). Once I got to that point I knew it was not going to go back together easily, so I scrapped it. The Panasonic had the rear spkr wires connected to the tweeters, the front wires connected to the door spkrs and then it had a separate sub-woofer pre-out (in addition to the 4 RCA jacks on the rear). I don't know how well it worked cuz it was new to us and didn't really get power properly. and we never had a chance to check it out. So I bought a used Pioneer DEH-P4600mp. I should have paid more attention. I see the rear wiring harness is essentially missing, and the wires are pushed onto each of the pins where a wiring harness would go. They are all separated by small pieces of cardboard. I hooked it up the exact same way as the Panasonic, but since i didn't have a designated pre-out for the sub, i connected the sub to rear RCAs. I also have a 2x60W amp for the sub (not sure of brand name; hard to see that under the seat). Once hooked up, it didn't sound very good. Might have also been the William Shatner CD that came the HU!! I disconnected the rear spkr wires from the tweeters and they are not connected at all. The rear spkr wires are connected to nothing, only the front wires are used for the door speakers, and the rear pre-out goes to the amp, and then to the sub. And it sounds awful. When I first turn it on, I get heavy thumping from the sub, at fairly low volume, then it cuts out and is quieter. If I turn up the vol, the door spkrs pop and crackle and sound blown. I am new to sub woofers (i'm old, and come form the age of 8-track, replaced by cassette...). What I'm trying to figure out is: would the head unit cause this, or do I have blown speakers? Would this head unit be compatible and able to run the sub? Is the amp my issue? I can replace this HU with a Sony Xplod CDX-GT200 for fairly cheap. As you can guess, i don't want to sink money into an older truck. THANKS!!
not sure if this matters, but the front spkrs use the original Ford wiring. So both HU spkr wires with a black tracer for the front are spliced together and share one common wire (ground?), and then have their own separate wire for R & L.
