Hi. I was hoping to get some opinions from individuals more experienced than myself. I drive a 99 toyota 4runner. I just ordered a Arc Audio 600.1 amp that will be pushing 620watts at 2ohms. I also ordered a Alpine SWR-1042D. Thats a 10" dvc sub, 4 ohms each making a 2ohm load. It is rated at 1500w peak/500w rms. This is my first sub. I want a clean, tight, bass sound. Nothing boomy. Its for my hearing pleasure and not for people outside of my vehicle.

Up front i have CDT cl-61a. They are 6.5" components. Got my tweeters mounted up front in stock locations. They are being powered by a california profile ap600. Its supposed to be putting out 100w x 2 to just the front door speakers. I may upgrade this amp.

My question is what enclosure would best suit my hearing needs. I plan on putting this sub in the back hatch area. I dont use it much so its not a big deal how much room it takes. I was planning on building a sealed enclosure. From the information i've gathered that ported is for louder, possibly boomier bass? But i figured that with the power im pushing to the sub that a sealed would probably do me just fine. Also thinking about a down firing position. I've heard people rave about the down firing. What do you think would be the best position for a suv? I do plan on moving it around for best sound but was interested in what people have to say about the down firing? Any input is great appreciated. TIA

well if you are just looking to get a box built for the type r and you arent looking for something really loud. i would go sealed. its not too hard to do. i used to run prefab-sealed boxes, i built one ported enclosure and never looked back. the ported was probably twice as loud as the sealed and i get great low notes out of my subs. it lacks a little in the higher bass, but im not too worried about that.

so are you saying that your lows are better and the only downside is that you dont get the higher sub frequencies? I have all the tools to make a box and thats what im gonna do. Im just not sure if its best to follow manufactures plans or if there are good tutorials for a beginner like myself that would sound better? I was hoping there may be some great plans out there for boxes with this particular popular sub that would yield optimum performance for loundess and clarity. I need to know how to calculate for port openings and tuning and all thats involved. I want to do it right. But not afraid to experiment if i think its a good start. I really like the downfiring idea, was hoping to hear from others on this. Thanks again for any input!
