amperage draw

I had a single 4 ohm sub in my car and just switched it out to a dual 2 wired down to 1 ohm.Now the question I have is pretty simple, but I got to ask:Will a amp draw more amps at a lower ohm resistance? The reason I'm asking is because my lights never dimmed when powering my old sub and now they're dimming real bad.I have not changed any setting on the amp as of yet,I've just been running the sub out control at 1/2(4 out of 8).I plan on resetting the gain, but I have to wait until my neighbor can help me.He uses a dmm while I'm turning the knobs on the amp.I will be getting a different car in a couple of months,so this info will help me decide what upgrades electrically to do.I will for sure be doing the big 3 to the new car.I plan on getting a early 2000's Ford Taurus.Any experience with systems in a Taurus?Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

my voltage is doing the same thing since I switched from 2 subs wired at 2 ohms to 3 wired down to 1.3 its draining the voltage bad! gonna put a second batt in this week

yes your amp IS drawing more current. it is working harder to make more power, hence the dimming. you can just wire it back to 4 ohms if its a problem.

for you next car do the big 3 and look into another battery in back. sealed battery.

how much power is your amp making now at 1 ohm as compared to 4 ohm?

I have not measured it yet,but Power Acoustik claims 2200 rms @ 1 ohm,1700 @ 2 ohm,and 1200 @ 4 ohm.I was only putting 440 rms @ 4 ohms with my last sub and I have not changed anything yet.By my quick calculations,if I had the sub out maxed it would be roughly 1200 watts @ 1 ohm.My gain is only at 1/4.

hmmm... i've read reviews of those amps saying they don't do rated power. your 2200 @ 1 ohm with good electrical may be closer to 1800ish or a little more OR less. since you havn't done any electrical upgrades it may be worse.

i know a few guys that have PA amps and really like them. so its not a bad amp by any means.

so for now i would just dial back the gain and save up for another batt and good wire for your next car.

I've heard the claims about not doing rated power, but I'm very happy with the amp.I do have the big 3 on this car with 4 gauge.I'm starting to think the stock alt with 175000 is my culprit, but I'm not for sure.
