Hello...brand new here...Just getting back to car audio after being away... Here is my system/vehicle 1995 Chevy Extended cab truck Head unit....JVC...KD-G820 Amp....4 channel Blaupunkt...Older model..velocity Front speakers..Infinfity Reference separates...6.5" woof Rear Speakers...Infinity Reference 4"x6" Sub...JL Audio...Older 10w6...Voice coils paralleled Enclosure...Q-Logic for under rear seat Other than the head unit (brand new) I bought all the other stuff a few years ago...Right now, I am running the head unit, stock speakers and the Sub..Two channels of the amp bridged for the sub. (amp rated to be 50wx4 RMS into 4ohm).....My plans are to install the new speakers and run fronts and rears off of the Blaupunkt.....and get a nice 2 channel amp that I can bridge for the sub...Here is what I am looking at..opinions?? Rockford Fosgate...Punch P4002....It is rated at 400 w RMS into 4 ohm (bridged)...I realize my sub represents a 3 ohm load, but what I have always heard about Rockford is that this is a non-issue...I will not be pushing it real hard anyway.. I am looking for a good match to round out the system....I want good representation for all frequencies...Not a "boom-boom" system...I could care less about how far away people can hear it....I want to hear it and nobody else outside the car (for the most part)....I listen to a big variety of music (no rap or thrash metal, but most everything else) thanks to any and all that respond... Willy
Thanks Clipser...... What I really mean is that you will not find me driving down streets or at stop lights with my system cranked turning heads with that look on my face "yeah, I got some stuff in here...are you gonna steal it"....Most of my commute to work is on two lane highway.....My neighborhood is mostly people my age and up (I am 39)...I live in a small town of 2,000 people...on a dead end street..... I do not discount the dynamat value at all....it is a consideration for the future... Willy
Hi Willy, and welcome to the boards. You say your lookin for a good match to round out your system, what EXACTLY is it you are wanting?
Well.... When I get the whole system done, I will be able to high pass the front and rears separately to get the optimum performance from them...I want to keep the abiltiy to balance the front/rear fade from the head unit (othrwise I might choose to pick one set of the pre-outs and feed it to an active crossover, then possibly 1/3 octave EQ and finally to the amps)....The JVC has 4 volt front rear preouts, 2 volt for sub preout....It has low and mid full parametric (well not infinite freq. pick, but you can vary it, as well as the Q and level) and the high is a semi parametric (fixed Q) The RMS from the amp(Blaupunkt) is 50 at 4 ohm, so each front component set and each rear speaker will have that much available...The sub I want to power with an amp with ample power (for headroom), but not anything excessive...This will not be a competition system....I want to keep factory alternator, etc....Just want to be sure this Rockford amp is a good match for the sub, or if there is an opinion for a possible better match.....Just a basic everyday system for my only vehicle...Not lookin for super loud, but more quality of sound...I know I could get better stuff and increase quality....My budget is tighter than I would like..... thanks for the responses... Willy
Gotcha! Ok, what you are taliking about doing should work fine. You sound like me, quality over quantity, with what you have, the end result should sound very good. I really dont see any reason to go with a different amp, it will put out MORE than enough power for your sub.
Thank you so very much...... I have one other question about this amp....I was looking at it through Crutchfield and it is $179.99 with free shipping.....Now last night I went on ebay and saw a couple of these for sale from a seller and it says they are brand new units....For about $114.00 with about $20.00 shipping....Now I have bought and sold a lot of pro audio stuff on ebay (drums, PA gear, etc) with no problems....Do you know of any other reputable places to buy it (perhaps cheaper than Crutchfield)...Should I shy away from the ebay ones (there is always a chance) or take a chance to save about $50.00.....Just curious....strictly your opinion....I figured I was gonna spend $250-$300 on an amp anyway....so the $50.00 is not a huge deal... thank you again... Willy
I am leary of pretty much anything on ebay, especially anything electrical. I personally would judt buy a new one form a reputable seller such as crutchfield...just my 2 coppers
That is my initial gut instinct....I am gonna go with that....I have NEVER been sorry for anything I bought through them..... I just bought my JVC head unit from them....I first saw it at a local Best Buy...It was $239.00 plus tax.....Crutchfield had it for $199.00...free shipping, free face plate adaptor, free wiring harness, free antenna adaptor...I got it in two days....and no tax!!! Thanks Viking Willy
well good luck with your system, and keep us all up to date on your progress. we are here to help if you need us!
Hey Viking...(sorry another question) I am thinking of mounting the new amp behind my rear seat....I hate to screw it in place because it would go through the rear of the cab body..Any suggestions on how I should fasten this puppy in place? The Blaupunkt is under driver seat....No room under passenger seat...I would rather keep my jack and stuff intact under passenger side of rear seat....Should be plenty of room behind the rear seat... thoughts?? Willy
Did this little trick years ago..... Pull the carpeting up from the back wall. Cut yourself a peice of 3/4 plywood or mdf a little bigger than the amp. Where you want the amp mounted, glue the wood to the back of the cab using an industrial adhasive, or something like subfloor adhesive is even better, i used PL400.....let it set up good ( ducktape will hold it in place till it cures) then put the carpet back on screw the amp through the carpet and into the wood. 5/8 or 3/4 iinch screws should work fine and not penetrate the cab.
I am gonna do that very thing...That is an awesome idea.....A friend of mine told me to use velcro.....hhhhmmmmm lets see....Panic stop and the amp pulls away and then you possibly have a fairly large wire that is hot with battery voltage (fused ofcourse) if it becomes disconnected to possibly short out....No thanks...I want it secure...your idea is perfect.... Willy..... ps...thanks!!
Would I be better off with a Kenwood KAC-9152D mono amp to run my sub? Would the SQ be better than the bridged Rockford? Thanks Willy
i got nothing.sorry. doesnt that have somthing to do with the amps damping factor?the higher the better.right? with more control...better SQ. sq. is sound quality right.
According to Ranger, the kenwood amps are very good, and I value his opinion......Ranger, what do you think???
In my last vehicle I had Kenwood amps....I loved them....I had (I think) an older 723...With that I powered fronts. (tweet, 4" mid (kenwood) and 6.5" older lanzar midbass)....I also paralleled my rears (JBL 6x9's)....I then had an 823 running bridged, powering two older kicker C-12 (8 ohm ea. paralleled)..... With that combo (HU was a Kenwood all preamp unit) I had very good SQ clean and decent volume....I am leaning towards the Kenwood mono amp... Willy
I've used the Kenwood KAC-9102D and the sound quality from it was awesome...I mean better than a lotta amps I've heard and had. Power is good also
