I had a Sony Xplod 600w x4 channel amp bridged between the rear 2 channels, powering a 10" Kicker CVR Comp sub. It would over heat after 20 minutes of playing. So I ditched it and got a new system. I got a Pioneer 10" sub and an Alpine 500w mono amp. It played great the night I bought it. I heard it in his Jeep the night before, he was playing it for like 5 hours straight. So I know it's good. The day after I bought it, I was driving and the sub started to play really high (not REALLY high, but way higher than a sub should play) frequencies that shouldn't be in the song, and like 2 seconds later it died and I have nothing. I still have power coming into the amp, around 13.4v. Right after it happened, I checked for power coming out of the amp at the speaker wire terminals, and it was pushing around 33v AC on a bass tone. I checked for power all along the output wire. I have power at the terminals in the sub box, and at the end of the speaker wire where the sub connects (inside the box). But nothing comes out of the sub. I tried hooking it up in my friend's Jeep that it came out of, it did the same thing. So it's not the wiring in my car. PS after all this, the new Alpine amp was just warm to the touch, after playing for like 45 minutes. The old Xplod amp would literally leave you with a burn after playing for 20 minutes.
Of the sub itself? So pull the sub out of the box and disconnect it, and hook the multimeter up to the positive and negative terminals where the speaker wire plug in on the sub, measuring in ohms?
That's ok, I won't either. It's 11 PM and the sub is in my car outside in the driveway. And I have to get up at 6:30 for work tomorrow. I'll do it tomorrow and let you know. I read it's supposed to be 2-4 ohms depending on the sub. What does it mean if it's out of range?
Measured 0 ohms. So do I have to get a new sub? wtf... this is the second system I've been through in a month.
the sub is dead. what are your amp settings? i read an article about explode amps. they aren't cut out for sub amps, they heat up and blow fuses when pushed hard. they do however work well for mids and highs.
Yeah, the Xplod overheated too many times and crapped out. So I bought this new one, Pioneer sub and Alpine amp, off my friend to replace it. Now I'm having problems with the sub (this thread). The kid that owned it before me took it to somebody to have it tuned. Can't tell you off the top of my head what the settings are, but they should be "right," whatever that is. I messed with the gain after this happened to see if I could get it to do anything, but all the crossover settings are the same.
