    I have a 12" Alpine R Type 1221D that i acquired awhile back.

I recently finished fiber-glassing the box for it, and im trying to find an amp to power it. (closed enclosure, custom fit to my car)

The specs for it can be found here
    http://www.shopping.com/xPF-Alpine-SWR-1221D

Pretty much 300w RMS, and the impedance is 2 ohm per coil. (dual coil).

I need help finding an amp at the right numbers and at what impedance please!

    budget of ~$200 max.

if it matters, i recently ordered a new deck (it's in the mail - Alpine CDA-105, found here. http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/prod...?model=CDA-105)

    Thanks for any help!

Also, is that 300w and 2ohm per coil? I would need an amp that did 300w at 1ohm or 600w at 2ohm, yes?

    Welcome!

You're going to need an amp that would give you 300 watts at 1ohm or 4ohm impedance.

If your going to wire your voice coils parallel then that would be 1ohm.

If your going to wire your voice coils in series then it would be at 4ohms.

    See link:
    http://www.the12volt.com/caraudio/woofer_configurations.asp?Q=1&I=22

I would shoot for 300watts at 4ohms so if you decide to add later on you'll have the headroom to do so.

Are there any brands that you would prefer or would anything decent be ok?

Anything decent in my price range would be awesome.

I heard somewhere that you should get a little more than your sub's RMS, to make sure you get full power out of it.

    Is this true?

also, 300w RMS @ 4ohms would power each coil 300w @ 2ohm, or would that be 150w @ 2ohm to each coil? (for the sake of learning!)

1 sub right? it would be giving 150/coil or 300 total.

you should be looking for amp with a bit more power just so it will give you headroom for later on if you plan to add another sub. that's why i suggested you should go with hooking your sub at a 4ohm impedance so if you decide to add later you can go to a lower impedance and you amp would have enough power

give me a few and i'll look into some amps for ya

hmmm, pickings are slim for a amp that will give at least 300 watts @ 4ohms...

Power acoustik is a decent brand, pretty solid...

the first amp will give you twice the wattage you need at 4ohms but if you are careful on the gain you should be more than fine.

The second amp is still power acoustik and puts out close (little over) than what you need but it's good.

then we have a planet audio amp, also a good amp i did hear that they can be a bit power hungry but good.

lastly, i found a Hifonics referb on ebay. perfect amp for your needs

heres your review for the Planet Amp CC suggested:
its a real solid amp. i ran a 1201D at 2Ohms and it rocked. i now have two of them but my electrical is not enough for them. They are power hungry but if you do the Big 3 you will be absolutely fine, especially at 4Ohms
