Actually, I find that hard to believe. While I guess it possible, I think its unlikely. Also the IDA X001 has no moving parts (no CD Mech) that can be damaged by dirt. I think its much more likely that the 9884 could be damaged by dirt.

All manufactures realize that a car is not the cleanest of environments and they design their equipment to survive a long time in a car.

well mine when I turned it around I had like a pound of dirt coming out... cause my car hadnt shaken out the dirt from sitting 30 years... but the ixa lasted me 4 years so I cant really complain. is there any way to avoid it? But I too find it hard to believe it was dirt... but all the power was going to it... we checked everything with a dmm... maybe it was its time to go.

Well, that much dirt might be a problem, electronics do get warm and need air to cool.

No you cannot close up all the holes in the HU, it needs air to cool. Can you put something an inch or so above the radio? It might help
