Hey, need some help here. I have an old school Alpine 3342 BBE digital EQ, and a Alpine 7982, in dash 3 disc changer.

I know it's old, but I love the setup and it sounds great. The problem is with the 7982 3 disc unit... See pic for reference.

Recently the digital display for the detachable faceplate will not light up. I have a 2nd unit of the same radio that I boiught a few years ago, just in case my orignal one ever broke. Now, here's the thing, the faceplate lights up and works fine on the 2nd unit, so this leads me to believe there is something internal in the 1st unit that isn't sending the illumination to the faceplate. All the buttons work, etc, but the display won't light up.

Is there anything I can swap from the inside of the working unit, into the other? Maybe there is a certain circuit board I can swap from one to the other? I"ve had the unit apart in the past to remove a jammed cd, so I'm pretty good. I can't use the 2nd unit because the tuner doesn't work.

Any ideas? I don't want to replace it with a newer style, as both the EQ and the radio match.

    Thanks.

Just a quick question, did you try to clean the terminals for the face and the stereo? Sometimes the they get dirty and thats why you won't get a good connection hence nothing will work with the face of the stereo.

    Welcome to the forums!!!

Welcome!! If the contacts are worn you can change the whole black faceplate piece on the front of the deck metal casing.

Hmm, didn't think of that. As I said, I have TWO of these units, so this wouldn't be a problem to do. I've never removed that front casing piece, hopefully it isn't to hard.

I DID try cleaning those gold springy pin contacts on the unit with alcohol and a q-tip, but that didn't bring back the backlit display.

that's some good advice, it does sound the contacts. Just try to change them with the other unit that you have and see what happens.

Ok, well, this thing is a pain to get apart, and I can't figure it out. The part of the case is sodered to another pieces, it's crazy. I'm not sure I can get the thing apart all the way to get to the board. Any ideas? I wish there was some kind of service manual?

there are service manuals on the net buy you have to buy them for like $14. I tried looking for a free repair manual but i couldn't come up with anything.
