Advice needed on amp/sub-woofer

    I am hoping for some advice on what I need to improve the sound and bass in my car. I have just bought an Astra and changed the stereo unit. I already had an amp and a sub-woofer from my old car but wondered if I needed both to make the bass & sound better? or will just the amp do? Whenever I turn it up loud it goes all distorted and the bass on the unit seems to overpower the music.
    I am clueless about anything audio but just want to improve the sound.

    you need to learn some more about car audio, your speakers are probobly junk, amping them would be useless, get a nice cheap set of coaxials. and than amplify the speakers, than your sub wont over power your system.
