What's the proper way of adjusting the equalizer input gain? It shouldn't be lower than the max. V output of the head unit, correct? My equalizer's going into a 50Wx4 amp.

Like an external band equilizar??? or the one built into a head unit?? Unless you have access to the proper equipment an equilizar is not necessary.

I prefer an external equalizer over just bass & treble. I'm much happier with an equalizer. I even have a 10-band on my PC which makes my music 1000% more enjoyable.

equalizers are wonderful to hone in on what freq's you want to hear. My eclipse has a pretty good one on board. If not, then I would probably still have my ten band hooked up.

lets see if i can remember.i read this a longtime ago in one of my car stereo mags.first set your gains on your amp to about1/4.start with your eq gains on zero gain and zero boost.then turn up your radio to just before full vol. now start to turn up your eq's gain untill it starts to distort.then back it off untill it sounds good to you.do front and rear seperate.now turn the vol on the radio down to normal listening vol.now if there is no alt whine.start to adjust your eq.make sure you have a song on that you are familiar with. i set mine to jazz music.(good bass and highs).you have to be sure your system is free of noise be for you start or you will only boost that noise.after level setting turn your radio down and with the car running make sure all is quiet.no hissing(alt whine)if not turn down your gains till it goes away. i hope that helps and i didnt skip a step,i'm watching my niece and shes bouncing off the walls.good luck.

Why would you set your gain with the radio on full blast?? Most people set gain at zero and then turn the deck up to the highest listening level they will have it...not really 100%....should be around 3/4...I don't know of anyone who turns the radio to almost full volume...

But hell...do what you want...I'd keep the eq at flat...boost on zero...then adjust the gain on the amp...then adjust the multi band

Hey cool9, do you know anyone with a O-scope?

thats the best way to set all your gains. If they have one, they will know what to do! especially if its a car audio shop.

Otherwise, keep the gain on the amp as low as possible, and adjust the gains on your EQ so that you have no clipping/distortion on the siganl (with the source unit at 3/4 volume). IAlso check for engine noise!

i didnt mean that that will be the normal level.just after all is done, if you crank it ,the music wont be all distortion, but the highest vol before distortion. i.e at full vol it still sounds good.does that make any sense.hell im tired i just got off of a 13 hr shift when i wrote that.the bottom line is set your gains so that at high vol it wont distort, and that you dont hear any niose at low vol(alt whine)...yhea something like that.tired today too.12 1/2 hr shift.
