Just curious. And a small bet with my son. What would b the negative/positive running a 10 and 12 inch sub at the same time? Could u run them in parralel/series with each other as long as they have the same type of voice coil?
Absolutely not. The 10 and 12 have a different mass and they would not work well together. You can have a 10 or a 12 in a car as long as they are in different boxes, powered by different amps. Who won the bet?
Based on ur response my son did. I did say different boxes but was sure 1 amp would be ok. Damn. LOL.
Ranger, could you please explain this some more? I understand why they would need to be in separate boxes.
They would need different amps too because they are different subs and most likely be running at diff wattage and even if not they will be made differently making it not a very easy thing to tune in harmony lol..if im correct..or something like that?
They have different power requirements, so one sub would play louder than the other. But thats not all, the 10-inch has less mass to move and in most cases easier for the amp to move it (over simplified explaination). During lower frequencies, which the 12 could produce better than the smaller 10-inch, the 10-is getting the majority of the power. I saw this once in a car, a customer had a two channel amp. The left channel was hooked to a 5-1/4-inch left front speaker and a 6 x 9 left rear deck speaker. The same for the right channel. It really did not sound that good, the 5-1/4's were much more efficient and most of the power went there. When the 6 x 9's needed power to produce lower frequencies, the power was not available. I know, the explination was way over simplified, but I like it that way. By the way, we hooked the amp to just the 6 x 9s. WOW, what a difference. The customer was way happy
So if you have two sepetate boxes and two seperate amps would there b any reason not to run 2 different size subs at the same time? Like the sound wave from the bigger speaker might cancel out the wave from the smaller speaker, as an example.
ive wondered the same but i actually think in a way the 10's can pick up bass notes better than the 12s while the 12ths provide the deep thundering base..i was thinking of a set up like this with kickers i have 2 12s was thinking of getting 2 tens to compliment them but i basically wonder this same thing
