So, I drive an hour to/from work every day. I love metal... and I want to put a system in my truck. I still want some huge bass for the nasty 808's but I dont want to compromise sound quality. Budget isnt really a problem, but I dont want to spend a fortune either. I want something awesome... If anyone has any advice on subs, amp, speakers and deck, i'd like to hear your input. Thanks

what kind of deck you got now? as far as amps subs and boxes..... bass drum of metal will need a sealed tight sounding box, subs i would get would be 10inch (kicker (cvr, cvx) alpine type r, type x) amps: matching alpine or kicker to the right ohms and wattage, main thing is not too get too big of subs, the bigger the slower the later you hear your bass drumm from metal tracks

I also listen to a lot of metal. I just built a ported box for 2 10" alpines and it sounds incredible. You'll have to keep up on your mids and highs also for metal. I get nothing but complements, and I can still make some people cover there ears with some dub step I have. I got alpines because they were cheap and easy, but now I think they are underrated.

I dont have a deck yet, im not sure sure what i want yet. I dont want a dvd player.. i dont want blu tooth, and i dont want gps... Pretty much want something plain jane but quality wise really good. Im a noob to this stuff so, i might be taking the deck thinking a little too far. I just want the best sound quality i can get. I was thinkin maybe some kicker subs. You think i should go one or two? I have a 2001 4 door dodge dakota. I never use the back seats so space isnt really an issue. Thanks

Yea ive heard a kicker l7 ported.. it was insane. my insane to the real worlds insane is probably two different things but... haha it was crazy to me. I couldnt get it really dialed in to metal tho.... he was more into rap. his door speakers were stock tho, so im thinking maybe that had something to do with it as well. Did you have stock door speakers or upgrade?

Yep, I have a set of alpine comps in the front, which I am over powering, in watts, and a set of 2 way 6.5 in the back. I can even here the high freq tick every time Dave Lombardo kicks the base drum :) His symbols come through nicely to. Just please do not clip any of your speakers, you will pay for it in a short time. If you live in the Bmore area I will gladly oscope your system for free. I have a friend who thinks he over powered his subs but what he did was clip them to death.

this is a false statement. woofer size has nothing to do with how "fast" a subs attack is. thats like saying a small sub can't play deep bass. which is also a false statement.

to the OP. i would say go out and listen to different speakers if possible. bring a cd you like and demo some in your budget. what is your budget?

if at all possible go to shops with actual demo vehicles so you can get a real world listen to your music.

how much room do you have under the rear seats? because 2 8's (or more depending on room) or 2 10's in the proper enclosure can give you the sound your after. i would say sealed just to keep it simple, and is something you may be able to build at home if you wanted.

as far as brands? well thats up to your ear and your ear alone. look for a sub based on your box requirement sizes. i had a kicker L7 10 in a .88 cubed box in my hatchback when i first got it. i liked its tight bass sound but it lacked the deeper notes i know my music had, so i went to a ported box. a slightly larger sealed could have worked too, but i didn't know that then.

like i said without knowing how much room you have i can't suggest a ported box or a sub brand. just look for one that works in your space. now if you remove the rear seat altogether ,thats a different story.

just choose good reputable brands and you will be happy for many many years.

you can find decent 4ch amps for your front and rear speakers (or just the front) in the 90 to 120 range. 50x4 is a good start. as for sub power..... thats up to you.

I'm sure you have lots of experience in this field, but I also did not get my first speaker last week.... I like yourself have owned a range of speakers all the way from 8 to 18, and 12s will not perform a techno or bass drum based song like a 10 or 8, just yesterday i pulled out a my 12" CVRS that i used while i was shopping around for a good 10". Found my 10" (MTX 9500) same songs sound SOOOO much different from 12s, and yes my 10 hits all the frequencies the 12s did, but definetly can tell a change.... please don't tell me that you can make a solo x 18" keep up with some fast paced euro dance track.... and if you can.... i need to see this

the way a sub behaves has to do with the enclosure it is in. the only suv i heard with 2 solo x 18's was not built to play techno, lol. it was built to play slowed music and LOOOOw bass loudly.(150+ DB's @ 25HZ) thats not to say that if they were in a different enclosure they couldn't play techno.

ive been to a lot of caraudio shows and most large sub installs are more geared for deep bass output. i can ask one of my SPL friends to vid their systems playing techno tho. might not sound as best as it should... the enclosure being the deciding factor....

Thanks for the input pedro. Yea.. im not too concerned on budget... I mean im not made of money, but if theres a big difference between real quality and mediocre quality, i'll spend the extra money. I found 2 jl 10w7's in a jl box for 500.. im thinking about doing it. Im gonna go look at them today, the guy says they are pretty new. We'll see. I have a dodge dakota quad cab and i never use the whole back seat area, so space isnt really a problem. Im kinda leaning on the jl w7 series... ive read countless reviews, seems everyones really into those. I just hope they are as good as i hear they are.

jl's are nice but are pricey... they also have a bad reputation for their surrounds rotting away, and jl wants a fortune to re-cone them. just make sure the surrounds are in good shape.

kostyam69 ... i re-read your post. i run 2 12's in a 3.7cf enclosure tuned to 28HZ.. tell me a song to play and i will test it out. im not a techno music guy so im not sure what to play.

Hey pedro... Well i ended up getting the subs, yea i wish i would have read your post, the outside foam around the subs have a few nicks and scratches. Doesnt look bad... Do you think it will effect the sub? Just looks i hope. Got em for a lil cheaper anyways. Do you think buying a used amp is a bad idea? If someone maxed out there amp every time they played it, i would assume that effects its lifespan. Maybe thats a concern? Im wanting to build a really good setup for the cheapest i can, i just hope it doesnt bite me in the ass...

Clipping is something totally different than over powering. In fact, there is nothing wrong with putting an amp to a sub that is slightly higher in rms watts than the sub. On the back of your hu you have the pre-amp out-puts (rca connections). The hu sends a signal to the amp at a certain voltage (usually from 2 to 6 volts). You have to match your amps gain to that voltage. The gain is not a volume knob, it is to set the in-put sensitivity. I often hear people say, "put the gain at 3/4," without even knowing what kind of hu is connected to the amp. That's not the correct way to do it.

Also, I have an oscilloscope and have tested my amps and hu in about every way imaginable. Do not use the bass-boost and keep the bass and treb at 0.

What hu do you have? I can't get back to the first page to look because I think this reply will get erased.

So anyway, I'm pretty much a noob too, so it's cool. I'm looking at a set of speakers I burned up when I didn't know what the gain was for. I did a lot of research, got myself an oscope and it hasn't happen since :)

Hey Pedro, i ended up getting those jls... the surrounds were kinda beat up, small nicks and scratches...I hope that doesnt effect the sound of the sub, just looks i hope. I have plenty of room for them, just hope they are the ones i really want. Do you thinking running a cheaper end amp will hurt the sub? I know they want like a 3 ohm or something, what if i run it at 2 ohm?

Well, i dont have a head unit yet. I bought 2 jl10w7'z yesterday. Would some head units be better for the jl setup than others? Maybe i should get a specific one... you have anything in mind? I dont want a dvd player, or gps, blu tooth, any goodies. I just want it to sound good, and look good. thanks

That's exactly what I was shooting for when I bought my hu. I'm not going to tell you the brand of it because I'm starting to feel like an alpine commercial, lol.

One good thing about my hu is that it has 3, instead of 2, sets of pre-outs.

Alright kool, ya i went to a car audio shop today, the dude was trying to sell me a kenwood hu because it had 3 pre outs. It was a $180 which doesnt seem too bad. I dont want all the crap, just a nice hu. How do you feel about kicker door speakers? He was trying to sell me on those too.....
