Do Alpine head units just suck?

I bought an Alpine 7892 and a few weeks after I bought it, it quit ejecting CD's. So I exchanged it a couple days ago and now the new one is doing the exact same thing. Do they just suck or what?

Shortened your name up on CAF huh? ;)

Alpines are great units and as speculated on CAF, you may be getting them from a bad lot...

    Shoulda gotten a Pioneer

I love alpine head units, though they do have that chronic problem of freezing up, but that is why there is a re-set button on many of there units, but it sure does suck on the lower end ones that don't have a reset button. I love alpine, they are in my opinion a more user friendly unit compared to the higher end pioneer units. And really, how can you beat the media xpander? I love the Media Xpander (basically BBE processing) I have to admit though Sandt38, I hardly ever see pioneer headunits coming back for repairs at CC, pioneer is very reliable.

Really? You don't sell the 840 then do you? I heard they were having reliability issues with the motorized faces.

Chris (BlkX) had an issue with his pioneer 740 or 7400, not sure. Wasnt with the face though. It led to him getting an alpine 7894. How about that seth?!

Nah, on a serious note. When you're dealing with low end decks, you never know whats gonna happen. I had an alpine flop on me once. Not an ejecting issue though. The remote lead died on me. Low end pioneer, or low end alpine, you could have issues. Hell, even with high end decks you could see issues. I'd say save a lil money and step up a lil in their lineup. You could definately just be buying from a bad batch though because it is wierd to get two defective decks back to back that way.

I was on CAF before I came here actually. I think I was slump on here but I lost my password, thus the extended version. I believe I will be getting a Pioneer now.

I personialy dont care for Alpine HUs...just a personal preference.

I have known people that have switched form Alpine to Eclipse and loved the Eclipse so much more.

Back to your original post, that happenes to any head units I just got and ESN replacement from Eclipse and come to find out the CD player doesnt work (didnt find it out till after I sold it :() Im somewhat pissed at Eclipse and Im thinking about switching HUs because that just really pisse dme off about the whole thing.

Then I just got the Zapco amps yesterday and I picked one up and it sounded like all sorts of shit was just rolling around in the inside so I calle dmy shop and brough it up there then we called Zapco because we didnt want to open it till we got the ok from them. We got the ok from then opened it and found out that it was just some of the bolts that old the back plate down. Wellt he bolts sit in little track and they are able to slide and they just were screwed in so they were just sliding in their tracks , but we got it fixed. Eeven though it seems like a 'top of the line' amp form a company like that would do a better job of checking something like that.

Well, any deck can have problems. I have seen other problems on the forums with the newer alpines(the weird noises from the motor, motorized faceplates dying after a few months, etc), but take it back and see what they say. If they let you buy a different brand then maybe you want to try that??? I love eclipse decks, and they have been VERY reliable for the local shop after they fixed the skipping issue. Having said all that, from reading the forums, I would say I rarely see Pioneer issues. Good luck with whatever you get(be it alpine, or whatever else).

    Chris,

My guess is since they replaced your 8051 with a refurb, it may have been shipped to you before being "refurbed." I emailed you but I will ask here...what did the new owner of the deck say the problem was?

I have the Alpine 7894, and a week or two ago, I ejected a CD then went to insert another one. It wouldnt accept it. I reset it and it worked fine. Maybe it just got confused and thought a disc was still in there. Not really sure. Just try resetting yours, hopefully it'll work :D

Yeah, re-setting it didn't help with either one. They both sounded like they were trying to eject the disks, but they wouldn't come out. I got a pioneer deh6400 instead. Would have got the 7400 but they were out of stock and I'm getting the rest of my system installed tomorrow. The pioneer looks better and it has a flip-down face which I like much better than the motorized face.

Definately shoulda got the 740. I like the MP3 and SEFQ. Too many useful features were left off the 640 :( .

Anyhoo, I love the Pioneers, the only thing I might add is time correction. The SEFQ will help in off center installs (uhh, that is all installs  ) but it is not customiseable. Shame, that is why I still need to play with my comps, I need to pull it a hair to the drivers side yet :( .

I am sure you will have no issues with your Pioneer, [nudges Cort] Unlike your Alpine issues[/nudges cort]

Courtney and i both have the same deck... I've had mine for around 5-6 months now with no problems at all. This is the first deck i've had that HAS NOT had any problems. In the past I've had HU's from RF, Eclipse, and Pioneer. Alpine is my favorite at the moment...

Ive never liked the look or feel of alpine HU's, but I wouldn't go as far as say they suck.

Im a pioneer HU guy for life. :)
