Good afternoon everyone! I am new to the forum and have a couple questions regarding subwoofer wiring & amp wiring setup. I have searched a few places and have yet to find an answer. I just picked up a 10" Kicker Comp VR single sub. It is a dual voice coil 2 ohm. I am looking for instructions or a diagram on how to wire the sub up for an amp, and what kind of am do I need to use? For example, do I need a Mono block sub amp, or a 2 channel A/B amp? I have a couple of diagrams on how to wire the sub on Kicker's website and on Crutchfield's site and It is getting kind of confusing for me. Here is what I have found at Crutchfield's site>>(One 2 ohm DVC sub, bridged 2 channel amp @ 4 ohm load) http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutch...enter/car/subwoofer_wiring/1DVC_2-ohm_2ch.jpg Crutchfield's site>> (One 2 Ohm DVC sub, Mono amp @ 4 ohm load) http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutch...nter/car/subwoofer_wiring/1DVC_2-ohm_mono.jpg Crutchfield's site>> (One 2 ohm DVC sub, mono amp @ 1 ohm load) http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutch...subwoofer_wiring/1-DVC-2-ohm-mono-low-imp.jpg And here is what I found on Kicker's site http://kicker.com/dvc_wiring So my question(s) -What is the best way to wire the sub to sound the best, get the most power and wire the amp correctly? -Mono block amp or 2 channel a/b amp? Thanks for any help!
If you can find a mono amp thats 1 ohm stable, go with that for the most volume, and wire the sub to 1 ohm. When ever you wire in parallel ( + to +, - to - ) your cutting the total ohm between those speakers (or voice coils) in half. so a DVC 2ohm sub wired in parallel between the 2 coils is going to give you a 1ohm load.
Ok thanks, If I cant find a mono amp that is 1 ohm stable then do I need to look at an A/B 2 channel amp?
You really have 3 options. 1, you wire each voice coil of the sub to a 2 channel amp. Each channel will see 2 ohms. 2, wire the sub to 1 ohm to a mono amp (obviously you will have to find an amp that is stable that low). 3, wire the sub to 4 ohm to a mono amp. Yes, there are more ways to wire it by bridging a 2 or 4 channel amp, but these three ways are probably the most...usual. Since i dont think you already have an amp based on reading your post, I would suggest finding a momo amp that will put out the wattage this sub recommends at 4 ohms. This will give you the flexibility to add another sub if you want and drop it to 2 ohms, and running it 4 ohms will give you a lot more options for amp selection since a lot of amps are not capable of running 1 ohm. The sound and wattage are unaffected by which way you wire it. The only thing that matters is that you get the wattage you want to the sub so first decide how you want to wire it, then pick an amp that delivers the wattage you want at the ohm you selected. For example: wire it 4 ohm, then get an Alpine pdx 1.600. That would give you 600 watts at 4 ohms, or whatever brand amp you like/can find. Your only real concern is that the amp you pick delivers your desired wattage at the ohm load you wire your sub. You have a lot of flexibility with that sub.
i'de try and stick to a mono amp that's 1 OHM stable, but only if you car/truck can handle it(remember 1 OHM has a strong draw and slap 60amp alternators and 12V starter batteries in the face) And when you go shopping for amps always check fuses, OHM stability, and HZ pick up range depending on your enclosure.
