I have a Kicker L5 12" in a vented kicker box that Ive only had for a couple months. It's powered by a MTX JH600 amp (600w rms = perfect match for this sub) with a Kenwood X994 deck (4V preouts). I have not messed with the gain on the amp at all...its turned all the way down.
The sub sometimes has a burning smell coming from it when I blast my music (3/4 volume or higher), and I turn it down right away. Lately, the smell is coming more often. When i turn my music up like half way, ill sometimes notice a smell when the sub first starts movin a little, not a burning smell, but something that reminds me of it and i know its the sub. If i bump my music, it is more likely to have a burning smell.
I emailed Kicker and told them this, and they said it's due to distortion or clipping. Does this sound right? How can I fix this problem? once again, i havent messed with the gain.
Could I have done damage to my sub and how would i know?

Ahh, I love the smell of Kapton in the morning. If you know, you are not distorting it and it's not clipping. Most likely it is the excessive glue burning off. It should become less frequent, till you really trottle on it. But you will always catch a whiff of it ever now and again.
