Hi, I am currently downgrading my system and was wanting to get 1 8" for the trunk. I was originally thinking of getting a JL setup going, but then came across a good deal on some eclipse equipment. Dont necessarily have a preference, just would like whichever is a better sub. I mainly listen to techno and rap, but want it to play everything well. I like the sub to hit low.
Which would be louder / boomier, which would have better SQ?
I would expect the jl to be boomier, with less sq, but would the sq still be good, just not As good as the eclipse?
    Here are some specs

    Eclipse

    Power Handling: 300w continuous / 600 Peak
    XMAX (one way): 0.73" / 18.5mm
    Impedence: 4 ohm SVC
    Fs: 40Hz
    Qts: 0.57
    Vas: 0.26 Cuft
    Rec. Enclosure: 0.3cuft sealed
    Mounting Depth: 4.5"

thats all the specs i can get my hands on for the eclipse. dont have the model number, an educated guess would be 87081.4, but not for certain. I am trying to look into if this sub is ok to be in a ported enclosure and what size, but if I cant find anything it might have to be in a sealed box.

    JL

Free Air Resonance (Fs): 35.14 Hz
    Electrical “Q” (Qes): 0.501
    Mechanical “Q” (Qms): 7.071
    Total Speaker “Q” (Qts): 0.467
Equivalent Compliance (Vas): 0.54 cu. ft. / 15.29 liters
    One-Way, Linear Excursion (Xmax)*: 0.375 in. / 10.0 mm
    Reference Efficiency (no): 0.127%
    Efficiency (1W/1m)**: 83.24 dB SPL
Effective Piston Area (Sd): 32.02 sq. in. / 0.021 sq. m.
    DC Resistance (Re): 3.77 ohm
    Nominal Impedance (Znom): 4 ohm
    Thermal Power Handling (Pt): 250W
Driver Displacement: 0.03 cu. ft. / 0.85 liters
    Net Weight: 8.2 lbs. / 3.7 kg

the jl can be put into a ported box at .35 cu ft. So, what do you guys think of these subs, do they sound good for 8's, 1 better than the other? Would only being able to put the eclipse in a sealed box automatically make the jl the better option, or does it not make too big of difference?

the bottom line is the box...even an 35 buck chinese made 10 watt sub will sound good in the right box

then you would need to hear them both in the same enviorment and let your own ears decide.....but me....I would do the eclipse. I always did have this bad attitude against JL....Long story
