I recently got some equipment given to me by a friend who doesnt use it anymore and Im wondering if its worth replacing with some (or all) of my existing system Let me start off by saying my music of choice is hip-hop so I do like heavy bass, but also a clean sound My current setup is (3) 12" JL Audio W3 subs. They are the dual coil 4 ohm model and between the 3 of them I have them wired down to 2.8 ohms or something right around there (its been years). They are running on a JBL 1200.1 sub amp... Now the enclosure that I have the 3 subs in is NOT custom built to JL specs. I know the JL sub works best in small air space, honestly the chambers in this enclosure are fairly big (sealed) and Im sure the subs arent running as efficiant as they could be...... Still though, Ive had this setup for several years and for the most part have been very happy Now just recently I was given the following setup from a friend... (2) 12" Kicker L5 solobarics. They are the dual coil 2ohm model. They ARE in a vented enclosure built to the Kicker specs. They are running on the JL Audio 500/1 sub amp. My question is if Im looking for the best setup for myself knowing that I do like heavy bass and nice thump what would be your opinions on the route to take...... Basically, which subs would you go with? the 3 JLs in the generic enclosure or the 2 Kickers in the built to specs enclosure... and then would you match that up with the JBL 1200.1 or the JL 500.1 ???? I dont really want to try both for the simple fact that winter is hitting Chicago and its too cold to be messing with that stuff if I dont have to.... But if I have an obvious upgrade I'd obviously be foolish not to use it Opinions?
unfortunately the only way IS to listen to each system on its own. i would just swap amps first. i had a chance to play with a 500/1 and i really liked it. it was a powerful amp, had a great crossover and had a smaller footprint to boot. how hard is it to change the sub boxes in your vehicle anyway? ive been in chicago once during winter. i know how cold it can get.
Nobody can answer this better than YOU. Not only is all the equipment you listed decent, but you are also going from a sealed sub system to a ported sub system. We can't say what you are going to like better. I agree with Pedro as it shouldn't be that hard to swap the components. After all the wiring is already done!
