I have a modest home system that is in need of a Sub.

I have a Pioneer VSX-D711 (100wx5) receiver powering a pair of Bose 401s. I also have a JBL Flix1 Surround System (circa late 90s). I had a crappy 100w 8 inch Sony powered sub that went south on me a couple years ago and I'm looking for a recommendation for a replacement. I hoping to find a decent one for under $300. My TV room is 10x20. I'm not looking to shake the house, but want something that can give some life to action movies. Most subs I see at BB are either junk(like that crappy, little Sony), brands I've never heard of, or brand names that start at $400.

Is it possible to find anything at least 10 inches, powered and of decent quality for my budget??

Has anyone here built their own powered sub and box with good results?

Take a look at Infinity's BU-80 or KLH's ASW10-120 subwoofers. Both subs havent been in production since early 2000's but you can easily find em on ebay.

The 8 inch infinity produces very tight rich robust room filling bass powered by a 75 watt amp. Packs alot of punch from a very small enclosure!

Klh's sub is a nice 10 incher powered by a 120 watt amp. Only downer bout the KLH is if your playing music with "ALOT" of bass you get that annouying sound of air trying to escape from a port hole thats seems too small. This usually happens only when I play a bass cd. Just my two cents, good luck finding a new sub!!

Thanks for the link. There are a couple there (Allison AL10 and Dayton SUB-120 HT) that are easy on the wallet($150) and the Dayton is highly rated for bang for the buck. I have a concern about them though since I've never heard of the manufacturers.

Has anyone ever heard of em?

I did stumble on this deal at Amazon for a Polk 10 inch that looks like a STEAL.

My concern on that one though is its only 50 watts. I wonder if that will be enough juice?

I see that Best Buy sells this for $200.....I wonder if I could hear it in action at the store?? (I'm not holding my breath on that one!)

    I ordered the Polk ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002KVQBA/ref=oss_product ) .

I didn't get a chance to hear it though since local stores didn't have any on display :(

Its gotten alot of good user reviews, so for $100 I took a chance. Hopefully it will be here by the end of the week.

I don't get Amazon's prices..... it was $100 a couple days ago, the next day when I ordered it, it was $104, just now I checked it and its back down to $98.52. WTF??

Its like Amazon's prices fluctuate daily like the stock market.

Got my Polk sub today and(for music) it sounds awesome!

I haven't tried it on a movie yet. Guess I'll have to dig up Jurassic Park later to see how it sounds for movies ;)

Its not stupid loud or crazy low, but it fits perfect for my HT system. I was actually surprised how big and heavy the box is considering its a 50w 10" sub. It certainly handles those watts well, cause it sounds louder and cleaner than my sh**ty old Sony sub that was 100 watts!!

It may be the best $100 I ever spent. Now I might have to look into some Polk surrounds :D
