 It's sad day. I put one of my box's in my ex's car a while back and her brother drove it for a while...well, he knows NOTHING about not turning the bass up on a head unit ALL THE DAY UP to make up for a lack of power coming from the amp. Anyway, here's what I started with....

    and here it is now...

so now, helpful folks, I need to replace this middle sub, but as you guys know...its old, discontinued, and hard to find.

I would just get another box for two of them, but I liked these subs and I love the enclosure. Besides, I got it 2 years ago from craigslist for $175 (box and 3 subs), so I don't want to part ways.

The sub is a 10w3-d2. Where can I find another one (new or used) or if I need to get a new one, what would be the replacement?

I've done that to a JL Audio sub before....

My suggestion would be posting a wanted thread on DIYMA, they have a larger audience and market place than here.

will it still play? or did the foam surround just fail?

    re-foam the sub.

I haven't tried to play it. The subs are coming out of the charger and going into a Redevous. A new system is going in the Charger.

Buy some new replacement surrounds from ebay. I replaced the surrounds on my 3 old school 10W6's a few months ago and they work great and get their daily pounding. :)

Just make sure to follow the directions, shim the voicecoil, and clean the cones and basket really well before gluing on the new surrounds. I used a small bit of lighter fluid to clean off all the gunk.

Also, don't be too hard on her brother. The surrounds on these subs were bound to fail anyway given their age.

It's really not very hard to replace the surrounds, plus they'll sound like new again once you're done. It costs around $30 for a kit to do all 3 subs. Ultimately, it's your choice. You could always have your ex's brother do it for you. ;)
