Last night my speaker amp got hot and shut off. It had popped the fuses (2 20 amp). I put 2 new fuses in (after taking off the power wire) and as soon as I turned the amp on it blew the fuses. I thought maybe my ground was messed up so I re grounded it in the same place my 300 fuse subwoofer amp is and tried again, it blew them immediately. I have 3 runs of 14 gauge wire for my ground and just 8 gauge for the power. What could be going on?
what brand and model of amplifiers do you have? 14 awg wire is REALLY small and 8 awg is barely going to make it. What do you mean by 300 fuse subwoofer amp??
Its an older Orion amp. only 300 watts so 8 gauge is just fine. And actually it's 12 gauge, but it worked fine for about an hour. My subwoofer amp takes a 300 amp fuse I meant
12 awg is to small for running 2 amps, your amp is asking for more current but cant get it cause the wire is too small and going into thermal, or your speakers are wired into too low of impedence, or amp is whacked. But id pick the small wire as your main problem first. What sub amp do you have that it has a 300 amp fuse?
No sorry, the sub amp has all 0 gauge, I was saying I grounded the speaker amp (The Orion amp i'm having troubles with) in the same place to make sure my ground wasn't just bad. It has 3 runs of 12 gauge to itself. Each speaker is at 4.5-4.6 ohm. The amp worked fine for about an hour, now will just pop fuses before even trying to do anything
How do you have all 3 power wires connected to the amp or do you have a dist block. Did you run a grommet when you ran the wire through the fire wall. Im thinking that maybe one of the wires has the insulation cut and maybe touching the cars chassis.
Okay.. the amp has screw terminals.. I stuffed 3 12 gauge wires under in the terminal and screwed it down, those are my ground wires. My power wire is 8 gauge coming from a battery in the back of the car, my power wire is about 6 ft long to the amp and it's a straight shot it doesn't have to go through anything. My ground wires are about 1.5 ft long, also a straight shot.
so you have no fuse coming off the battery at all? Maybe the power wire is shorting against the car somehwere causing a short.
does the amp smell funny;like burnt electronics? my 4ch amp decided to stop working one day for no reason. maybe something in your amp just quit. i also have a 2ch that did that. it still had a green light but it was blown. the power supply inside fried. it was an ooold amp anyways. over 17 yrs old.
.. yes I have it fused. Its all hooked up correctly I know how to do that. And yeahh it smelt really burnt a bit before it blew, but then I turned it down for awhile, apparently not enough lol Yeah my guess is it just fried something inside, it was really old too. Oh well time for a new amp yay
