I have a problem with my car audio. I turned on my car there was some sound from my speakers then there was no more sound the head unit is working fine, but there is no power getting to the amps. all the fusses are fine the power wireing goes from the battery through a power cap then splits into my to amps. i was thinking maybe the power cap has gone is there anyway to test it?
If you have a volt or an ohm meter you can check the power between the cap and amps. Or it could be just a bad ground, or the turn on lead. The fuse doesnt have to be blown to not work, i had a problem where my subs would cut in and out and it ended up being the fuse was broken where it connects to the metal but not blow, if you have a meter you can check that aswell
put a meter on the wire coming onto the cap and see if there is any voltage, then put it on the outgoing wire and see if you get any voltage going out. Did you check the inline fuse near the battery?
ok i didnt have a volt meter so i took the power cap out of the cuircte and still the amps arent powering. I have had problem with my headunit before i was thinking maybe it is the the cable which turns the amps on when the car starts but can't remeber the name of the cable. if it was that how would i test it?
Maybe it's the remote wire that powers the amp on from the head unit.. An easy way to check that is take a wire and just touch one side to the power coming into the amp and then touch the other side to where the remote wire goes into the amp.. if the amp comes on than you know the problem is somewhere in the remote wire coming from the head unit

your amps aren;'t turning on, the first thing i'd do is check for power with a DMM(digital multi meter) you can get one for 12$ at a local hardware store, i got one that i use to check resistances and voltage for 10$ at one near me. than, once power is proven, take a peice of wire, and jump your HOT line (posative) to the remote wire on your amp, does the amp power up? if it does, your remote wire is ground fault or has an open in it, could also be internaly from your deck not sending out the signal that it's turned on. first off, your cap shoudlnt effect your power to your amp if it dies, you will really only notice it if the effect that it stoped reocur, as the capaciter is wired in prallel with your cricuit, so the power is always going trough, just charges and pumps when power is requestest. much like a baloon, it fills while not in use, than emptys once requests. so wire this back into it, than now if you have no power at these 2 power lines, open your hood, check your terminations, clean them off, check your in line fuse, there should be at least 1 fuse in line with your power source, most have 2, 1 at the amp, and 1 under the hood. I my self only have 1, 2 is for what we call redudancy in the circuit, should one fail to snap another will, it also is supposed to protect the vast majority of the wire, so running a new wire becasue of melted plastic isn't required, this is old fashon thinking. anyhoo, that explains thats. if you dont have an in line fuse get one in there. this is most likly a remote wire issue, i'm fairly certain by the sound of it that it is, you're info was very vague but as near as i could tell that sounds to be your problem. you will have to get a DMM and do the test we told you to do, to verafiy this. than, you will have to have sombody or your self open your deck, find your remote wire splice, check it for shorts, opens, and voltage, check while the car is off, it should read 0, than while the car is on, should be 12v. you now know the deck is turning on the remote wire. now you know its in the line, replace it. and turn it on, your problem is fixed
Hi thank you for all ur info i will have a try and buy a DMM and see what i find out. There was some things happening to my sound system before it cut out. My head unit has a USB and AUX port on it and with both these the speakers and SUBS at the back of the car stoped working when i used this function but on the radio or CD player all speakers worked fine. All the speakers are wires through the amps. I was thinking maybe there is a fault with my headunit as well.
