If my budget was around 800, would it be better for me to buy a 3 way component speaker or just buy each part of a 3 way separately?

Go with the factory comps, they already come with the proper crossovers and crossed over at the proper points.

I was leaning towards SQ, but with enough bass to feel, just not too much where its overwhelming the treble or vocals.

The SQ champ from where i'm from is just using a simple 2-way system. if your not looking for extremely loud vocals and treble and you're just going for great SQ, invest in some really high end 2-way comps and amp for the comps.

going 3-way would prolly mean you'll have to redesign your door panels and that will be a real pain in the butt.

if you go with 2-way, what did you have in mind for comps and an amp?

ive seen and heard SQ set ups at SBN. ive seen over the shelf 2 ways and parts express mids and highs too.

its a tough choice to make. do more research on what brands are being used.

ive heard, hertz, focals, infinity's, polks, tang bands and a few others.

With the 3 way I was going to put midbass on the door and the tweets and midrange in the kick panels. I don't really have anything in mind for comps and an amp yet, that was going to be my next question lol.

How did the focals sound? Was it the higher end focal comps?

i love the sound of focal. I was using focal k2p before in my expedition.

I would expect the k2ps to sound just luhhhvvlaay. But with my budget, id probably have to end up getting the access or polyglass line if I decided to go focal. And I haven't heard much about the lower end Focal comps.

not sure. someone once told me that one of the SQ champs back in the day won using stock speakers in his car. it was all processing. now this was a while ago.

if your going to buy sperate speakers piece by piece check out parts express.

first figure out how much power your going to use. 25 x4 , 50 x4 , or more.

then look at freq responses and how they will blend together. no need to buy a mid that plays up to lets say 1500HZ for instance and then a tweet that starts to play around 3k. that will leave a huge gap.

make sure you tone match then also. dont gat a tweet with a S/N of 96db and a mid with a 88 db rating. the tweet will overpower the mid all the time.

keep them within 1db of each other. its harder to hear a 1db diff, unless your superman and have super hearing. a 3db diff is twice as loud.

like i said if you planning on picking and choosing diff brands its going to take some homework. whereas with a comp set its all ready done for you.

then you just have to worry about speaker placement.

the K2p's were very nice but don't rule out the polyglass line, they have even better midbass then the K2P's. the K2P's were had really awesome vocals.

Pedro is right, that's why i would lean more to just a 2-way system... it's not just the speakers that make a great SQ system, it's also the amp/s.

If your really hell bent on getting the focals, here are some SQ amps that work extremely well when paired with focal:

    Steg
    Genesis

there is another one, but i can't remember the name of the amp... Steg I know for sure works awesome with focal.. don't rule out looking for used steg amps, the people who use them take VERY good care of them and you can save A LOT

I don't want to go bat **** crazy over focals or anything lol, but I tried researching for 3 way comps on crutchfield and focals was all that came up.

Focals are great speakers though, i suggest you really look into a 2-way system, great SQ could be had with a 2-way system.

go to a local car audio shop and have a listen to the focals, you may not even like the way they sound.

StickeeRice, if you go with the focals i found one of THE BEST amps to pair with focal.. Celestra amp! great amp. found one on DIYMA for ya. used but you can tell it's greatness! sexy fuggin amp!
