I'm all new to this car audio stuff so I'm a little lost. I have a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee and i bought new speakers for my front and rear doors. my fronts are 6x9 Boss speakers and my rears are 6.5 Boss speakers. I wanted it to be louder and not to sound like crap when i turn up the bass and treble. It now sounds good except it's the same volume limit as the stock speakers. The rear ones are 400w a piece and the fronts are 350w a piece. Shouldn't the volume be able to go a lot louder than my stock ones? is this because I have a stock head unit? Should i get an amp? Thanx.
welcome to the forum. your boss speakers will not handle the power they claim. just to let you know, they exaggerate their specs. the reason they have the same limit is probably a feature built into the factory head. i would assume an amp would fix this. you would need to find an amp that takes speaker wire inputs or buy a line out converter. an LOC converts speaker wire outputs from factory heads to rca jacks so you can send a signal to the amp. you may run into a common prob with using an loc. you'll need to have a remote wire going to the amp. the remote wire is like a turn on switch for an amp. while it is always hooked up to the battery it needs the switch to turn it off and on. what kind of budget do you have for an amp? or a head ( i would get a new head first, thats just me tho)?
I just bought a head unit. Here is the link. http://www.BossAudio.com/main/804 I need to know what type of amp to purchase. How many watts? How many Channels? Also need it to be cheap!
look for an amp that has a realistic RMS rating and a good THD rating as well. you know like ?? x 4 @ .05% distortion. look for a 4 ch amp. id suggest at least 75 x4. look for a good THD rating. it will tell roughly how clean it will sound at high volumes. ignore MAX ratings. i cant stress that enough. i have these lil old school amps that are rated at 50 x2 but @ .02%THD. meaning they will play that 50 watts cleanly.
I know nothing about THD and RMS. I don't know what they stand for or anything. What does 4 channels mean? Whats the largest wattage i can get?
my 6.5 speakers say they peak at 400w each but i know now thats just a load of BS. I researched them and i couldn't find the RMS of them. What do you think they would be? I found out my RMS of the 6x9's that i got are 175w each. When buying an amp. How do I figure how much wattage I need? Do i add up the watts i need for each. 175 for each 6x9 which would be 350w, plus the RMS for each 6.5 which i don't know so it'll be (x). So that would mean i would need 350w + 2(x)? Is there anything else i have to consider? I found this amplifier here.http://www.buy.com/prod/boss-audio-cw350-chaos-wired-4-channel-400-watt-amplifier/q/listingid/56615297/loc/111/212885661.html Don't judge me on this choice because i have no knowledge about them.
THD= total harmonic distortion. the lower the percentage rating the cleaner the amp can sound at higher volumes. thats if your gain is set properly. RMS= continuous power output. MAX power = a rating you ignore. lol. so find an amp with good specs and you'll be nice and happy for many years to come. case in point, i have 3 old ass amps with super clean power that sound as good as new amps do. they are roughly 18 years old, and built like tanks. so try not to skimp on your amp. 50~75 watts x 4 should do you well. 4 channel means you will have 4 channels of amplification.
hmmmmmm.. the new invisible amps huh? lol. i dont see a link... although when i quoted your post i see an ebay link to a legacy amp. no offense as i know your on a tight budget, but thats normally flea market/ pawn shop crap. as is boss. sorry to say it. go for a more reputable brand. what is your budget like?
