i am currently paying the price for wrapping my @ss in glass. I have a 1992 corvette that has a complete stereo system in it. I recently had a leaky roof and filled one of the floor pans with water. i pulled the amp out and got it drying off. I bought a new 4 channel amp and put that in and i had a horrible alt whine. i have to keep the sub amp's RCAs disconected because it was so loud that i was afraid it would blow my speakers. i had all kinds of problems with speakers not working and sounding like crap. i finally rewired everything. i did use some old wires but replaced alot of wires as well. i believe my issue is the ground. i know it can be an issue on corvettes because they have all fiberglass bodies. can any one shed some light on the issue. i moved the ground wire to the seat bolt figuring it was the best grounding spot. the problem was not fixed. what could be wrong? should i run a 4 gauge ground wire from the battery to both amps? any ideas on the issue?

the seat bolt is the last place you want to ground your stuff, because of chassis flex it really does not make a tight ground. You also want to make sure your ground wire is short as possible. Make sure all paint is removed before your screw it down. If it didnt have whine before obviously it must be from something you changed. Make sure your rca cables are run on the opposite side of the car from the power wire. I would get a ground block where you can ground everything at 1 spot, and make sure it is a good spot with clean metal, im not sure where a good spot is in the vette but start lifting up the carpet and panels in the trunk area, im sure there is someplace in that area.

oh well thats good news about the seat bolt. i was always told they are good places to ground to. i was thinking about running 4 awg from the frame up through the floor pan. the whole body and cabin is fiberglass. then ill use a distribution block to split it to two 8 awg wires. Do rca patch cables turn bad after getting wet? the cables were sitting in water. the front speakers have next to no sound and sometimes they wont have any sound. i just bought a new amp for the car (JL e4300) for $50 and its brand new! im hoping the new amp and the new power wires will fix the issue. the power wires and the rcas are on opposite sides of the car.

anything sitting in water I would replace, or at least clean the ends of the cables with some emory cloth, but it should would be replaced. Are you saying your going to ground the amps outside the car, then through the floor pan, then split it, then to the amps?? Where are the amps mounted?

the 4 channel amp is under the passanger seat and the sub amp is in a compartment right behind the passenger seat. the wire from the frame to the distribution block would be about 6 inches long and the two 8 awg wires to the amps would be about 6 inches for the 4 channel and about 10 for the subwoofer amp.
