I have a pioneer deck that has the USB hookup and i have my iPod connected sittin in the glove box like many. Well my iPod has for a long time held no charge and so every day i start up my car i wait about 5 mins for it to charge the iPod so I can jam. Now I've hooked up a flash drive to the same USB connection and it worked fine. I'm wondering does anyone run a USB external hard drive to listen to their music libraries? I'm thinking about giving it a try but the only external hard drive i have needs more power than the usb can deliver to it, so I'd need to buy a new one. Just wondering anyone have a specific external HDD that they use that works? Any trouble with road bumps and the HDD skipping or breaking?

I've used a Western Digital Passport HD with a Pioneer radio and it worked. It is powered through the USB port and the radio accessed the drive pretty quick. The drive I used was a 80GB drive. I have heard that larger drives take a while to access but I have not seen that so I'm not sure

The drive needs to be formatted FAT32 not NTFS. If its formatted NTFS, the you will need Western Digitals formatting utility. Windows will only format 32GB to FAT32, so you will have to partition the drive and the radio will not know how to deal with the partitions.

You might wanna try this for a large drive (not sure what the limit is) click on START then RUN and in the dialog box type CMD and hit enter, at the prompt type format /FS:FAT32 X:, replace X with the letter of your portablr HD. Again I don't know the size limit with this method

I'm pretty sure there really isn't a limit, I had to use command prompt in a computer course several times. And thanks for the info, I didn't realize the windows tool limited it to the 32 gig for fat32. And again, thanks for the information!
