Hello! Let me preface this by saying I don't know a thing about car audio. I recently had four Alpine Type S SPS 507 speakers installed in my 2003 Toyota Tacoma - two in the front doors and two in the rear side panels. I have an Alpine 9884 head unit and overall it doesn't seem to produce more sound than the old stock speakers. The highs seem a bit too high and they rattle my rear panels when I attempt to turn them up. Someone suggested that I add an amplifier to my setup in order to produce a better overall sound. I was under the impression that the head unit was enough. Should I add an amp and if so what size? The speaker runs at 75w RMS. Someone also suggested that I add a sub woofer (maybe one 10 inch) to add to the depth of the sound. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

you could run a small amp to the fronts and its up to u but i wouldnt run an amp to the real. they are just for rear fill, personally, i dont even run rear speakers. the do some sound deadening to make the panels stop rattling. you can get some duct insulation at lowes for like 15 bucks. its just basically foil with tar on it. put it anywhere around the speakers and behind all the panels that rattle.

Thanks for the advice! Any thoughts about adding a single sub woofer somewhere in the back of a Toyota Tacoma extra cab?

you can turn the bass down so the rears dont rattle as much. or fade the sound to the front more.

i enjoy a good rear fill. i turn mine down till you just barley notice them but they still put out some sound. to add some space to my music.

as for an amp you can look into a 4 channel amp and get a small sub. a 10 will do but i have heard some 8's and even 6's that will get the job done.

the front 2 channels can run the door speakers and then the rear can be bridged to run a sub. very simple.

what kind of bass would you be looking for? loud and booming or just enough for the inside?

Enough to fill the inside with a little extra thump. I was thinking about a 4 channel amp and a 10 inch Alpine Type S sub woofer. Would it be a better idea to run the first two channels up front and one to the sub or run four (2 in the front, 2 to the rear) and get another amp just for the sub? Also would an amp rated for 50W RMS per channel be sufficient? Are Alpine amps OK? And my last question - when my four 5x7s got installed, the factory tweeters were not disconnected. Can this cause problems for the new speakers? They are two way 5x7s. Thanks for your help!

ok instead of a 4ch you may wish to look for a 5 ch.

having the factory tweets should not pose a problem at all.most amps these days should be 2 Ω stable in stereo.

50 watts per ch is plenty.
