So as long as I keep on changing the oil every 3000 miles and dont beat it to death it *should* last a long time? There isnt much I can do to add performance is there?

Oh my engine is the 1.8L 4 cyl. Dont know if it makes a diffrence or not. I did a quick search on google for Iron Duke, Pontiac Iron Duke, and Pontiac 1.8 Iron Duke. It didnt find anything on a 1.8L Iron Duke...

Ya, I gotta agree with Sandt, Gm has probably the most reliable V-6's in the industry. All of them are bulletproof. Thne only problems that I know of ion the 2.8/3.1 engines is they are known for piston slap, but not until far after 150k, when the engines are more than likely worn out anyway. As for Chrysler, on the other hand, the 3.3, and the 3.8 were good motors, but my god, the 3.0's were worthless, other than power. Find me a 3.0 that didn't burn oil by the time it had 80k on it? You probably can't. And their 4 cyl. in the late 80's-early 90's, the 2.2/2.5, were know for head gasket problems, but that was it. As for fords, I don't know, I owned a ford taurus as my second car, bought it with 144k on it, a 92, sold it with 146k on it. Put way too much money into that car in 3 months time.
