Just wondering if soundstream headunits are any good or do they really suck. I was just browsing on woofersetc and i came across the Soundstream VIR-8000. It didn't look that nice but i thought the features looked pretty cool but when i saw the price it really made me wonder. At $269.99 it seems very cheap. Just wondering if any of you car audio gods heard about soundstream. Is it comparible to the cheap crap like boss and pyle?

actually i never knew they made them either. they surely can't be that good, especially looking at the price that they go for.

Sound Stream was making HU's back in my days. I had mixed feelings on them. The pre out voltage was not very high, the tuners were just ok, nothing to brag about, tape deck performance was really good however. I alwys liked the looks of the old SS HU's though. I never owned one cause they just didnt quite do it for me in the overall performance catagory. I dont who makes them for SS today, but they may be quite the radio, I dont know.......

Viking, Aznboi and Dave... What do you think is a good head unit. I don't want anything that expensive maybe in the $200 - $300 range. What do you suggest i get?

IMO, ANY HU would work in that price range, well, except for sony....I have always been partial to Clarion myself. Its just like anything else you buy.........They ALL make junk............

Well...Right now I have an Alpine head unit. I've had it for about 2 years...works flawlessly and does everything I want it to do.

Only drawback about it is that it has weak 2 volt max preout...if you want higher 4 volt preouts you gotta get the higher end Alpines

But I am about to upgrade soon to a pioneer premier deck...My dad and brother have sony decks...they are actually not that bad

I personally like Pioneer and Kenwood.. Would love to have an Eclipse CD5000 but that is out of the pricerange.

actually what i really want to get is a dvd head unit but i don't want to have the big monitors that go along with them. Like i said, i'm not in my car for that long and in the philippines there is no navigation. I was looking at a JVC KD-AVX2. Crutchfield had some good reviews for the unit. It's over my budget but i think i can manage it. Are the JVC's ok or is that something i should stay away from? I was also looking at a Alpine DVA-9860 but i kinda didn't like the reviews.

yeah if you want a smaller screen the JVC KD-AVX2 does look pretty nice.

Thanks for the heads up at sonicelectronix. I think that would look pretty good. Now its just a waiting game for me. I have to wait til i go back to the States on vacation or hopefully my dad will be willing to ship it over to me when he makes his trip soon.

i sold the soundstream headunits you are talking about. tc 20s and so on. they were overpriced. but the tape decks were built by nakamichi and were awesome.they carried a lifetime warranty if i remeber correctly. the tape decks that is.

Soundstream was bought out and nothing has been the same.

I've got an old TC308 ,tape section was amazing, the tuner was designed by Larry Schotz great quality for local stations but poor for distance,Back then the 3 top units were the nak td 1200,kenwood 999, soundsteam tc308
