So I got a few extra subs laying around the house and I have a home theater system that is great. but the sub is old and self powered and turns off at high volumes.. instead of buying a new one for 500+ dollars.. i was maybe thinking of just using a car audio set up. you know. a nice carpeted box to match.... nothing.. and my kappa perfect 12 inch. but is there anyway that this could hook up to my tuner?, its' got sub outs, i think i have to power it. any ideas? I know Viking should know...

    thanks

A nice low tuned box would be nice.

Also invest in a plate amp or other dedicated sub amp. Partsexpress has some affordable amps.

Then patch cord from sub out to amp

when you say self powered do you mean it has its own amp?

if so why not use that amp on 1 of your subs you got lying around.

i have an OLD ASS mtx blue thunder 12 in an old bandpass box running off of a yamaha 70 watt sub amp.sounds real nice.

the 8 it was running just didnt have enough bottom end for my action flicks.and the sub is hidden away in a wicker box my ex got for the house.had to use it for something.

    Sure you can Ibanez!

Build a more ideal enclosure for the sub, run it off another amp fed by the sub-out of the preamp, done deal!

    I have this amp
    http://www.madisound.com/cgi-bin/index.cgi?cart_id=3483395.3182&pid=452

Running two subs....My subs I bought used for $100.00 back in 1992. They are kicker C12's...8 ohm...I wired them in parallel....The box I built out of 3/4" mdf...I basically made it a big cube, with two completely isolated chambers. Each chamber is 1 cu ft. I made the rear deep enough to house the amp (in it's own space)....I have ran it two different ways....With the sub out of my Marantz dolby digital receiver and currently I have it running this way: My Sansuii integrated amp has "A" and "B" outs...The "A" outs run to my JBL L7's and the "B" speaker outs run to the sub...I basically just dialed in the sub xover to get the blend with the JBL's to get a nice musical sound....

This sub will absolutely rock with music and with movies...It shakes the slap floor in my basement.....awesome....

madisound makes speaker kits, sub kits and also carries stuff for making your own xovers....

hey no prob.thee band pass is great because its tuned really low.it has no output passed 70hz.BUT!!..i run 2 subs in my house.the other puts out up to 150hz.

it took me awhile to tune them to my room.the crossovers i mean.

i have my xbox hooked up to my 6.1 amp and most of my games play in 5.1.i was playing BLACK and the explosions and gun fire sound AWSOME. nice solid impact when i shot my magnum.

    they shake the house.

Well, lots of different ways you could do a box.

One of the easiest as always is a sealed enclosure. But being in the house, and being run on a little less power, youmay want to go for a slightly larger sealed box, that will lower the total "Q" of the sub and provide a lower frequecny extension and eliminate some of the boominess.

As far as vented box? heck ya! again, this is going in the house so we need to look at the response curve....Same with a bandpass.

Do you have the specs for the woofer ya wanna use ibanez?

I plan to use a 12inch Infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1D

    http://www.infinitysystems.com/caraudio/product.aspx?ProdId='KAPPA+PERFECT12DVQ'&Ser=KPE&Cat=SUB

Should I make a box? Or just go with a normal sealed car sub box? I really don't care what it'll look like.

Maybe run two References instead of one Kappa Perfect?

At the shop I work at we have these really nice single "bomb" boxes. (vented) They're made to run crappy subs and make them seem loud. would these sound alright?

I have got to honestly say, if you have the means to build a custom box for in home use, please do so. SQ will be better, Low frequency extension will be better, and you can make it to fit your needs.
