I have a 4 channel kicker kx650 amp with 2 infinity kappa component speakers up front and some kicker speakers in my rear door. My question is can I somehow connect a subwoofer to my kicker amp? I dont really want to purchase a new amp just for 1 sub. I would like to put just 1 10 or 12" subwoofer in a box in my trunk for a little added bass. I have an 03 Accura TL and I hated the stock bose system and thier sub was the crappiest sub I have ever heard. If it can be done, how hard is it to do. Would I have to bridge the 4 speakers on 2 of the amp channels and the subwoofer on the other amp channel? Should I get 2 subwoofers to use both the other channels if that is how it needs to be done?

    Thanks for your help.,

You going 2 use d 2 front channels 4 d highs at 2ohm stereo and d rear I will recommend 4ohm mono, if you run d sub at 2ohm d amp will get hot real quick.
One sub is probable good because of d power, but you can run 2 is your call.:D
1 sub single voice coil 4ohm.
1 sub dual voice coil dual 2ohm.
2 subs single voice coil 8ohm.
2 subs dual voice coil dual 4ohm.

what you are talking about is a good way too go!!!! Simply run all 4 of your Highs to the front channels of the amp, then get whatever you want for a sub(s)... (it hopefully has a built in x-over).I dont know the minimum impedance that amp can run so i dont know for sure what you would need for subs, voice coil wise, and it would also depend on whether you went with 1 or 2 subs.....

I would say run all the highs from your front channels and HIGHLY recommend you read Vikings thread on passive crossovers

I just came from the stereo store and the guy told me that I had to have another amp to run a subwoofer. He said that a 4 channel amp is only meant to run 4 speakers , not 4 speakers and an amp. He told me that it would overheat and cut out if I connected a sub to it. Does this sound right?

Is that guy a installer or a salesman!!
You can run that amp 2ohm stereo (4 4ohm speakers) on the front channels and the sub on the rear channels, like I said before run the sub 4ohm mono that way it will run cooler.
You can run it 2ohm stereo in the front channels and 2ohm mono in the rear but it will get HOT and don't forget to use minimum of 4 gauge wire just for that amp!

Hold on guys, dont the kappas run at 2 ohms, if he ran both speakers off of one channel (front) then the rear off the other channel wont they both see 1 ohm. will that amp run at 1 ohm. I could be wrong but all the kappas i have seen run at 2 ohm.

ok my bad he has kickers in the rear, yea so 2 ohm for the kickers but what to do with the kappas if they are 2 ohm, I dont think 1 ohm will work on that amp.

he could run the rear's off of the head unit.

hmmm...what would a 2ohm and 4ohm load be in the end.
    if two 4's=2ohms,and two 2's=1ohm.then a 2 and 4=???.

    So a 2-ohm and a 4-ohm in parallel is 1.333333333 ohms

Now why in the world would you want to run different impedences on one channel. People, thats bad. Both speakers will drop the same potentail across the voice coils, but they will use different amounts of current. The 2-ohm will use twice as much as the 4. In other words one speaker will be doing all the work while the other is just goofing off.

Were did this bad idea come from?

You have four channels, two for the front speakers and two for the subs.

ok,sorry.he shold just buy a new amp for his sub/rear speakers. since his front speakers are 2 ohm models. or just run the rear off of the radio.

could that be why the sales person told him to buy another amp?

I thought the speakers divided the power evenly.also dindt know the impedance would go below 2oms.

thought it would be somthing wierd like 3,but i'm also really bad in math.

Even if the speakers were 4-ohm and 8-ohm you still cannot hook them the the same channel. The combined (parallel ) impedence will be 2.6666667 ohms. Most amps can easily hadle that type of load. The problem is that one speaker will be using twice the current. In other words we still have the same problem, one speaker will be MUCH louder than the other.

ok i see.so....if it was able to handle the 1.3 ohm load. wouldnt that be ideal for the rear output?

i'm not saying to do it,but can it be done without destroying an amp.
again IF the amp were stable to below 2ohms.like a 1ohm stable amp?kind of like an autenuater.?

4 ohm in the front, 8 ohm in the rear........is an old method for getting a front stage and rear fill in your car on a 2 channel amp, it works.......

i thought his front speakers were 2 ohm.

is there a way to wire the front four in series kind of like we do subs??Or at least the kappas.
