A 12-inch is a 12-inch speaker is a 12-inch speaker. Typically one is not louder than another. The surface area of the speaker moves the air and all 12-inch speakers have approximately the same surface area, therefore the same potential for making noise. Speakers with long excursions have larger surrounds and less usable surface area. But the excursion makes up for the less surface area. So what makes one speaker better than another? I can make any Radio Shack 29.95 12-inch speaker as loud as any JL. The question is how long will the Radio Shack Speaker Survive. Not very long. Given the same car and the same amount of power, I feel I would have a good chance at winning and SPL contest (as long as I only have to go once). But again it will not survive. A good speaker is about quality. How well is it built? Its also about support. I sell alot of Planet Audio. If a customer blows a woofer, most of the time we replace it. No arguements, no giving the customer a hard time. The best JL is crap if the dealer wants to be a jerk. Support is everything. In my opinion the W7 is a little overkill, unless you really plan to push it. A 750 watt RMS woofer will NOT sound good if you only push it with 300-watts. With all that said, dont buy a Radio Shack Woofer. I'm going on and on and on again, it must be getting near my bed time
i like the w6v2s over the w7s they are MUCH more economical. a w7 in my book is a step down from the jackhammar and THAT SUB IS A POS
ok i'd have to throw in my 2 cents. i agree with whoever said that a 12 inch is a 12 inch.. ive had numerous 12" subs in my car, and heard numerous 12" setups. honestly, they all sound about the same. some hit harder with lower size amps and so on. I've had (2) 12" JLW3 on a JL 250/1 Amp and it sounded just as good as my friends (2) 12" R-Types on Alpine M-500 Amp. Just depends on your trunk space and so on. But about the W7 you guys are crazy, my friend has a 13.5"W7 and a JL 500/1 amp. and it blows about any system i've heard out of the water.. Not competition systems, just plain ol what my friends can afford systems. I would just say go with what you think you will like, not what other people tell you to get. I asked people what to get they told me to get Memphis, cause its the new "hot" thing out around here.. Get real, I went and chose between JL and Alpine. But JL is definitely more expensive, and unless you got a lot of money to blow, then I'd go a cheaper route, unless you need JL that bad or can find it cheap. I have (2) 12" Alpine X-Types and (2) MRD-1005 Amps, not hooked up yet, but I had 1 of the subs and 1 of the amps hooked up and it pounded. So the best of luck in your search.
