I am looking at buying a new sub.Old one blew. I am choosing currently between the JBL GT4 12" in their purpose built ported box, or the DLS W312B 12" sub in a ported enclosure. What would you choose and what would the difference in sound and output be? I listen to almost all kinds of music, so something that is fairly accurate and can go reasonably low would be nice. If their is any other sub you can reccomend in the same price range, I will look into those also. I have only about 150wrms currently, but will upgrade in the future to about 250wrms for the sub.
I am not familiar with either speaker or the enclosures they are in. But here is what I do know. We sell prefab ported enclosures, and I am not fond of the way they sound. Heres why. Prefabs and many (not all ) purpose built boxes are small so that they will fit in any car. The problem is that really small ported boxes tend to work well in a very narrow band. Not Good For All Kinds Of Music. I would want to listen to both in the car with different songs and genres. And really listen to them. Personally (if its an option ) build your own ported box and you would be better off. Believe me, you can get more than enough advice here.
do not fear the jbl.. they are an honest sub (true to specs).. quite efficient, and sound a whole lot better than you'd expect for the price. I install a lot of jbl subs, and the gto's in my opinion sound best in a bandpass box if you're putting them in a trunk. ported if it's an in-cab application.. never heard of the other ones..
Thanx for all your input!! I went ahead and bought the 12" gt4 sub with JBL's built ported box. It is definitely louder than my previous sub, but a little "looser" sounding. All-in-all I'm happy though!!! Still need to upgrade my amp to something a little stronger. Does anybody maybe know where I can get this sub's theile/small info? Just wanna compare the output of winisd and the current enclosure I have. The port looks suspiciously short.
How would the subwoofer be influenced if it is underpowered? Output, accuracy....? Just would like to know.
Obviosly the output would be less. less power also will limit your dynamic range of the system. Thats the difference between the loudest sounds and quietest sounds expressed in dB's. As far as frequency response, no real change. whether its driven by a 5 watt tube amp or a 300000 watt plasma driven centrifugal output array from star treks enterprise audio room, it will "sound" the same
