the stock system in my 2004 hyundai elantra is a four speaker system with a stock tape player head unit. i may install an aftermarket cd player later. how do i put in a pair of 1" tweaters? i plan to install them into the front doors near the top of the dash. but how do i hook them up to the stock headunit? the stock headunit is made for 4 speakers not 6, as you know i am a newb at this^_^

Dont bother with the speakers untill you upgrade the headunit. Once you do that replace the stock speaker with a set of 2 ways that have a tweeter.

Can I add my 2-cents worth.

As long as the tweeters are added with crossovers in line your factory radio will not even know that the tweeters are there.

I would just inline them with your factory speakers. Also I prefer 18dB per octave crossovers on tweeters. Reason, high frequencies are directional and an odd-order crossover will put the tweeter slightly out of phase and make it less directional.

Sorry you ended up with 10-cents worth

so i should just replace my stock door speakers all together? i already install some nice rear speakers. but i noticed that my brothers BMW has about 8 speakers total. and the front door has the two 6.5 speakers and near the dash there are the two tweaters, the sound those speakers make is ridiculous, i know ill never get to that kind of sound quality but i know i can get closer with 4 speakers in the front door, two 6.5 speakers and two 1" tweaters, or is it possible to have two tweaters in the back doors or would that just be to many twearters, and to get a nice system like that and not break the bank how much would i be looking at spending for an 8 speaker setup? random guess around $600?

Here is what I would do

Replace the front door speakers and add tweeters if you like. Then change the factory Head Unit. Your sound quality will go up alot

On mounting speakers, doors are flimsy. We need to put a little Dynomat on the door to let the speaker perform at its best. If there is room behind the door panel, build an MDF board the the speaker can mount to and mount the MDF board to the door.

The more solid the speaker mount the better it will perform. Remember any vibration you can feel in the door is sound that is being absorbed and not heard. Make the area that the speaker mounts in solid.

With a 500-dollar budget you should be able to have a really good sounding basic system that you can add to later.

When you ask about the number of tweeters do you include 2 way speakers as a tweeter too?

I do not. When I say tweeters I am talking about an add on tweeter.

The reason I like add on tweeters with door mounted speakers is that in most cars the door speakers are much to low. By adding tweeters up higher in the doors you can bring the sound up, greatly improving the quality of the sound.

Now with that said I just want to bring up one thing, I do not like tweeters mounted high in the A-Pillars. That causes to much seperation between the source speaker and the highs from the add on tweeter and in most cases does not sound good.

i was thinking about adding the tweeters on the front doors right behind the side view mirrors on the inside of the door, there is actually alot room there so that i can build a super small MDF and paint it to blend right in, you wont even see it. the hight level in relation to a persons ear when there sitting in the front seat of the car of the tweeters will be about 2 inches under the average persons ear when sitting and about 1ft-2ft in front of them, the stock speakers are about 2ft in front of the persons ear and about 2ft under, will that cause an imbalance of sound because of the positioning of the tweeters and the 6.5 speakers?

the tweeters in the back doors may go dead middle of the doors right under the window, so a person sitting in the back: the tweeter will be an inch in front of there ear and about 1/2ft under. or i was thinking about mounting the back tweeters right next to the rear speakers.

It should sound great, and the tweeter location is ideal.

Just remember to take your time and the install will look great.

Take your time and have fun.

so how would i go about setting up 8 speakers? do i just splice the tweeters into the exsiting wires? the picture below shows a rough draft of how i plan to do it. the ovals are speakers and the black dots are tweeters, the red box is a head unit, if i install an amp will the front stock speakers be able to handle it? should i go ahead and upgrade the front speakers already

yup install them that way if you wanna blow the tweeters out... you need a cross over to seperate the highs and lows so that only the highs get sent to the tweeters and mids/lows get sent to the speaker.

o ok thats why some tweeters come with crossovers. do the crossovers hook up the the headunit?

The crossovers that you get with tweets should be "passive" type which means that they will not go anywhere near the HU. splice wires from the existing speaker leads (close as you can to where the tweets will be mounted) and the crossovers will go between the original leads and the new tweets (in series on the positive lead, preferably)

PS... am I the only sicko here that noticed that your diagram looks like some kinda freaky stick people porn drawing?
