this question is very subjective... what type of music do you like? Do you perfer sharp loud highs (tweeters) or do you like a "softer" sound? Do you have an amplifer or is this running from you HU? Do you have any subwoofers?
This will be a good starting point.

i listen to a variety of music from rap to rock, depending on your head-unit, i prefer infinity. i have a jvc kd-avx1 dvd player and it sounds so crystal clear its crazy its sounds like theres a symphony in my back seat.

Alpine 6.5 and Alpine 4x6 powered by Alpine 4 channel for $224.00, can't be beat. I've ordered from ikesound, and i was 100% satisfied. This would be a good setup if you are on a budget and don't need anything too extreme.

I like JBLs 4x6's not as harsh as the alpines or kickers.

But audio is so darn subjective isn't it?

    Yes, a very subjective question......

I remeber years ago, Panasonic come out with a set of cheap component speakers, around 69 bucks if i remember right. I saw them when i pulled them out of the box to install into the demo board, and about laughed my ass off!

They were cheesy paper coned mid-woofers with almost no excursion, the tweeters looked like something out of a factory system.....even the simple 6dB per octave x-overs were made of the cheapest components available.

When I finished hooking them up and test fired them, i thought I had the wrong speakers turned on, nope it was them. Theyy sounded GREAT! Others listened and thoughtthey were a 300 dollar set of components! they sounded better then many of the high end sets we sold!

Only problem with them was they didnt like much more than 75 watts of power (clean power) theyalways launched voice coils and blew caps, (15 volt if I remember right)

But what i am saying is dont look at brand names.....Let YOUR ears decide. That is the ONLY thing that matters. Everyone hears a little different and percieves sound a little different. Go with what sounds good to you.

I agree with anything infinity, the reference series are decent, but the more expensive Kappa's are WELL worth the money.

i agree with The Viking, the stock speakers in my 2004 hyundai elantra are full range cheapys but they beat the pants off of $300 after market system when it comes to bass highs and lows. i listen to them they sound way better than the alpines i had in my other car, i wonder why that is...

I love Boston Acoustics, you should be able to find some within you budget, the infinities are good but cant compare to the quality of Boston.

I have a rather inexpensive jvc setup in my "holes" for now, and couldn't be happier with the sound quality- it's very good for not even having to try.

(8" components are in the works, though..):D
